Re my message about this being a dangerous site. I was using Chrome as my search engine. My Nortons is up to date. As I said, if I use Bing then Nortons lets me access the site. Beyond my IT skills. Not a problem tho, I will just use a different search engine to Chrome when I need to visit the site. Cheers.

Hi, the information I provided was for my soldier (Charles Cootes) in the 77th. The information however is only available from the WO records in England. I was lucky enough to have a friend who was travelling to the UK and looked these up for me. I have spent 10 years trying to find information on my Charles' military & private life prior to his 2nd arrival in Australia. Luckily for me I have found his discharge papers (he was in India and decided to take up property in NSW in lieu of a pension). I have not been able to find how he travelled from Calcutta to Sydney with his family but I suspect he caught a ride on a troop transport whcih seem quite numerous between India/Australia/NZ.

Can you give me any more details on John and where you have already searched? Have you searched for children and marriages? My Charles was married twice and had children in Wales, Portsmouth, India and Sydney while he was in the army and more in NSW when he returned.
I'm not sure on the etiquette of this site but let me know if you would prefer to email me direct.

Sticky I've attached a list of the depot/barracks locations of the 77th between 1843 and 1860. I notice on the list of Crimea medals that there are 2 John Taylors in the 77th at the time of the Crimea, with regimental numbers 1656 and 2937. Which is your John Taylor?

Joanne

Are you certain that your Anne is English?

I found my g-g-g-grandfather's marriage in the ROI. He was a private in the 77th Regiment and was stationed at Richmond Barracks in Dublin for a short time in 1856. The regiment was on its way from Aldershot to Sydney, Australia.
Seems he picked up a wife while in Dublin. He and Bridget were married in the Parish Church of Chapelizod, Dublin as per the United Church of England and Ireland 20 Nov 1856.
Regards, Gregory

Armed Forces / British Army discharge papers 1859

Can any one tell me what the following line means on my ancestors discharge papers?
"H.24716 D P Forces to Sydney 25/9/77"
My g-g-g-grandfather was in the 77th Regiment and requested and was granted a discharge on 31 Dec 1859. He was in India at the time. I know he was in Australia in 1861 and suspect he left India after March 1860.
Thankyou
