Norfolk / Re: Surnames Drew.

Hello!

I am researching the name DREW. Unfortunately, I do not have much to go on. They came from England and immigrated to Throop, Olyphant, and Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA in the late 1800's to early 1900's. The family then picked up and moved to Buffalo, New York.

The DREW family is related to the FREEMAN-TONKIN family from Finmere, Oxfordshire and Kenwyn, Cornwall... I have my suspicions that the DREW family may have come from Saham Toney, Norfolk, but I am not positive.

The farthest I can trace back is Elisha (also spelled Elija/Elijah) DREW (1851 - 1909) married to Isabelle (maiden name unknown). They immigrated to Throop, Pennsylvania in abt. 1886 with their children. It seems Elisha may have either died or divorced Isabelle not long after they moved to Throop. Isabelle is burried in a pauper's cemetery in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. I have a copy of Elisha DREW's will.

Elisha and Isabell had: Dorothy, Margaret "Maggie", William and John.

John's middle name was William, but everyone called him "Billy." Billy married Mary Elizabeth Freeman, whom everyone called "Lizzy." For reasons unknown to me, many of the family members picked up and moved to Buffalo, New York.

Billy and Lizzy had: Olive, Phyllis, William, Wilbur, John Edward, and Warren. Warren DREW was my grandfather.

...I am not positive, but the parents of Elisha/Elijah DREW may have been William DREW and a "Mary A.", who resided in Saham Toney. However, the family names are so darn common, it is difficult for me to tell if I am on the right track, or if I am researching DREWS that don't belong to me. I am positive of my DREW family up until Elisha and Isabelle. But I am not positive where they were from, or who their parents were.

Please don't hesitate to write if this sounds like your family.... I have lots of pictures and documents to share!

Good day,

I am also researching my DREW family. Unfortunately I don't have much to go on. The farthest I can trace back is my 2nd-great-grandparents, Elisha (also spelled Elija/Elijah) Drew (1851 - 1909) and his wife Isabelle (maiden name unknown). I suspect they're from Saham Toney, but I am unsure. Elisha and Isabelle moved from England to Throop, Pennsylvania in abt. 1886... They had 4 children: Dorothy, Margaret, William and John. John William Drew was my great-grandfather. Apparently everyone called him "Billy." He was born in England in 1883 and immigrated to Throop, PA with his parents. "Billy" married Mary Elizabeth Freeman. Apparently everyone called her "Lizzy." They lived in Throop, PA, then moved to neighboring Olyphant, PA before moving to Buffalo, New York. They had 6 children, among them my grandfather, Warren Drew (1924 - 1989).

Does this sound like your family?

Kind regards,
~ Cortney

Hello!

I saw your message, and tho I know you posted it long ago, I thought I'd respond because I do have a John Tompkins married to Elizabeth Freeman. The Freeman family are my direct ancestors, and came from Finmere. Perhaps this is the same couple you are looking for?
