London and Middlesex / Expensive Apprenticeship 1800
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 09:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've found an apprenticeship indenture from 1800 for an ancestor of mine.  It is with a draper in London, for 7 years, and the fee paid to the master is £50.  That seems an awful lot of money for the time.  Would this have to be paid at once or were installments common?

Occupation Interests / Re: Master Hairdressers

My G-G grandfather was a hairdresser, according to the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census.  He is also in a 1902 street directory, stating his address and profession.  He was from Bethnal Green and it would appear he lived above his own shop.  He is listed as 'employer' in some of the censuses.  In one census he is a 'Master Hairdresser'.  His father was a hairdresser too.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 census - Spitalfields

Hi All,

This thread is quite old but I found it via google.  The Edmund Sale AmyUK speaks of is my G-G-G-G-grandfather.  The Sale name in my tree carries down to my nan, who was born in 1927.  I found the mention of a Huguenot link with the Sales interesting.  I am descended through Edmund's grandson, a James Sale born around 1868, who married a Maria Hensher.  Maria was of direct Huguenot descent.

Regards,

Brad.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1881 census 'Fancy sex'
« on: Friday 06 January 12 18:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have the 1881 census for some ancestors in Cheltenham. In the occupation section for one of the daughters, aged 29, she is listed as 'Shopwoman' but just above it in different handwriting are two words that look like 'Fancy sex'. A couple of entries below, there is another woman from a different family, aged 30, and again the words 'Fancy sex' in the same handwriting as above. Has anyone else found this? Is it a pervy census-taker?
