Lancashire / Re: Bombing in Oldham, World War II
« on: Saturday 17 May 14 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Joyce, I can't really add anything but my dad was living in Oldham during most of the war. He remembers this incident but did not know your family. He thought it was a V1 (doodle bug) rather than a bomb as confirmed earlier in the thread. Later during the war he stayed with family in Yorkshire and remembers seeing a V1 flying over their town.

Keith, I went up to Mooi River 2 years back looking for the grave of a family member of a Candian Rootschatter. Unfortunately I dont live in SA anymore so I cant go back. I will look through the photos I took and see if there is anything that may interest you. I think if there is a memorial stone there wont also be a grave. I could be wrong on this though.

Hayfields was a big military camp, including a hospital I think, during the Boer War.

Now that you mention it, I think LeslEY is a girls name and LeslIE a boys name. Hindsight always makes it easier.

Interesting and now all the SAffers are trying to get to Aus.

Try this site, it requires a login which I didn't try but this is the official archives department for the local (KwaZulu) Natal government. They apparently have 3 repositories, in Ulundi, Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Durban wasn't really where the Boer War was fought so the other 2 are more likely to have what could be of interest to you.

Good luck.

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: roberts family of Dover Kent lookup please

Hi Bonzadel, yes this site is very fascinating and lots of members who are very helpfull too.

My 3 * g/grandfather George Roberts was born in 1825, his eldest son, also George, was born in 1854. There was no Lucy listed as any of his daughter so there is nothing common at that point.

Good luck with your research.

My dad left by ship, I have the reference number for the Archives document to show when he left.

If I can get some proof that he left on a British passport, that should satisfy the consulate.
