The Marriage at St. Dunstan, Stepney on 29 October 1681 which many researchers have accepted as being for Jean Boutefoy a native of Bouttavan is in fact for the marriage of an unrelated John Boutefoy and Ann Holmes.

Ancestry have the marriage of Jean Boutefoy and Ann Maison as having taken place in the Chapel at the French Hospital at Spitalfields on 2 October 1681. This information has been provided to them by the National Archives of the UK (ref: RG4)

The baptisms of Jean’s children were also at the Spitalfields Chapel apart from Jean Boutefoy circa 1683 whose baptism record has not been found. Ann Maison used the anglicized surname of Homme for the baptism of their daughter Ann in 1686.

There is no disputing that the events at the Spitalfields Chapel also appear in the registers of Threadneedle Street.
 
At this point I can say without any hesitation that Jean Boutefoy was not the brother of my ancestor Gabriel Boutefoy as many researchers have assumed.

We recently located the marriage contract, 4 pages, for Gabriel Boutefoy and Marie Charron at the Paris Archives.
 
This document is written in the older Middle French and thanks to the generosity of the volunteers at FranceGenWeb we have obtained an extract of the primary information in modern French which was then translated into English using Google translate.
                                                                                                                                           The translation into modern French cannot be guaranteed to be 100% correct as it was not an easy task.

The Marriage Contract is dated 3 November and 17 December 1650.

Gabriel Boutefoy was already a Master Weaver by this time and in view of this may have been born around 1620 or even earlier.
He is described as a clothmaker, ribbon worker in sheets of gold and silver and silk living in the suburb of St Germain des Pres, rue de Grenelle.
His father was Jean Boutefoy deceased – merchant of Vic near Magny and his mother, who was a signatory to the contract, was Marie Bary.

Gabriel’s sister Marthe Boutefoy and her husband Estienne Joyeaux were also present. This couples son Estienne later moved to London.
                             
Marie’s father was Thomas Charron a bourgeois (middle class citizen) of Paris living in the suburb of St Germain de Pres, rue Guisarde. Her mother Louize du Liemer was deceased.
She had a half-brother named Jean Charron from an earlier marriage of her father’s living in the suburb of St. Germain des Pres, rue de Grenelle.
                                                                                                                                           The second part of the contract on 17 December 1650 which acknowledges that the marriage had been completed was signed at Jean Charron’s home.
                                                                                                                                      Marie’s sisters Magdelaine and Francoise were also signatories.

As they married in 1650 it is likely that Gabriel and Marie had children in Paris before relocating to London in about 1862.

The baptisms in London for Gabriel and Marie’s children were at the Spitalfields Chapel and also appear in the registers of Threadneedle Street.
 
There is a burial of a child named Gabriel Boutefoy on 1 December 1682 at St. Dunstan, Stepney with the father’s name Jno. The parents of this child may very well be the John Boutefoy and Ann Holmes referred to earlier. It is possible that John was originally baptised as Jean and anglicized his name.                                                                                                                                     Unfortunately, there is no way of proving a genuine link with Gabriel and Marie as the baptism, marriage and burial records for Paris were destroyed by arsonists in 1871 towards the end of the Paris Commune. Only a few records have since been restored using information from other sources.
It is very fortunate that the Notaries stored the Marriage Contracts at another location.

Anyone interested is welcome to a copy of the document and the translations.

Finally, there does appear to be a link between the two Boutefoy families at a later time.                                                                                                                                      In 2010 Richard 1979 placed a comment on Rootschat regarding the marriage of Marie Boutefoy, b. 1692, the daughter of Jean Boutefoy (deceased) and Ann Maison aka Homme to an Estienne Joyeaux in 1716. As Estienne is the grandson of Marthe Boutefoy and there does not appear to be anything on Ancestry about this, any information which can be provided would be very much appreciated.

If anyone has the fiche for St. Michael's could you please look for a baptism in the name of John Hill in the period 1756-1761. Thanks.
