Right, now for the Holloways!

The marriage cert shows Benjamin batchelor of full age, a cabinet maker.  He is the son of John Holloway a foreman at the West India docks.

I haven't found Benjamin in the 1841 census but I think he the Benjamin shown in the London, England, Selected Poor Law Removal and Settlement Records, 1698-1922 in 1840 son of John Holloway a weaver married to Sarah Field age 40 wife of 20 years as at last 14 Aug, married Stepney, no cert.  Children Benjn age 19, John 17, George 15, Mary 13, Wm 9, Jeremiah 5, Edw 15 months.

The marriage record shows the marriage was by banns, witnesses Charles Ardonis and Mary Swan. Mary Holloway married Thomas Swan (widow) 17 Oct 1814 Christ Church, Spitalfields.  Witness Benjamin Holloway.

I think this is the family minus Benjamin in 1841

John Holloway Age   40 born   Middlesex, England silk weaver

Hundred   Ossulstone (Tower Division)Middlesex

With
John Holloway   17
George Holloway   15
Mary Holloway   13
William Holloway   11
Jeremiah Holloway   8
Edward Holloway   2
Sarah Holloway   40
All born in county

I think this is them in 1851

5 Little George Street, Bethnal Green
John Holloway Age   52 dock labourer born  Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England
Spouse Sarah Holloway age 51 born   Bethnal Green
Children
Mary Holloway   22
William Holloway   19
Jeremiah Holloway   16
Edward Holloway   10
Charles Holloway   6
all born Bethnal Green

In 1861 John is once again shown as a silk weaver, but in both 1871 and 1881 he is shown as a dock labourer.

I believe that John Holloway was the son of Benjamin Holloway and Ann of New Inn Yard baptised 1 Jan 1800 at St Leonard's Shoreditch,  born 5 Nov 1799.

This is where it gets tricky because there are two Benjamin Holloways born about the same time in the same area.  One, a widower, married Ann Stevens on 28 Feb 1788 at St Dunstan and All Saints, witnesses James Brown and Samuel Mears?  I believe this is our man.  His first marriage was probably to Hannah Golding.

There are two possibilities for his parents John and Mildred Holloway who baptised a son Benjamin in 1757 or Jeremiah and Mary Holloway who also baptised a son Benjamin in 1757.

I am not sure who Sarah Field's parents are either.

That's a shame, I could have shared my tree and there are a number of public trees on there for the Holloways, most of which are, I think, fairly reliable!

Will post about the Holloways later, need to do a few other things now!

Mary Ann is a bit of a mystery.  She married Benjamin Holloway

On the marriage certificate, 2 Sep 1850 at St Mary's Church, Paddington she is shown as Mary Ann Warrington daughter of Thomas Warrington, ropemaker.  She is shown as a spinster and as a minor, i.e under 21.  Abode, the same as Benjamin is North Wharf Road. She makes her mark so presumably cannot read or write.

On the birth certificates of the various children her maiden name is shown as both Waddington and Warrington

The children are:
John Edward born 1852
Sarah born 1859
Mary Ann Holloway   born 1863
Alice Elizabeth born and died 1867
Benjamin Holloway   born 1868
George Holloway   born 1870
Emma Holloway   born 1873
Thomas Holloway   born 1876

Her date changes on the various census

1851 age 22 born Marylebone, London
1861 age 30 born Marylebone, London
1871 age 41 born Marylebone, London
1881 age 55 born Marylebone, London

I am not sure I have found her in 1891 and have not with any certainty found a death.  There are rather a lot of Mary Ann Holloways!

This could be her in 1891
Name   Mary A Holloway
Age   66

Birth Place   Walworth
Civil parish   St Mary
Residence Place   Rotherhithe, St Mary, London, England
Piece   387

Household members
Name   Age
Mary A Holloway   66
Emma Holloway   18 daughter born Walworth
Thomas Holloway   15 son born Walworth

This could be her death

Mary Ann Holloway
Birth Year   1827
Admission Date   28 Jan 1880
Age   53
Hospital   Brookwood Asylum
Hospital Place   Woking, Surrey, England
Place of Abode   5 Marigold Street, Bermondsey

However, I am not convinced.

The witnesses to the marriage are William Maddox and Joanna Sullivan who both make their mark.

I have been unable to link the witnesses to the Holloway family or find William Maddox, the closest I have got is William Madden born 1833 Marylebone who appears with mother Mary Ann Madden in the 1851 census and probable parents Thomas and Mary Ann Madden in the 1841 census in Marylebone

This could be Joanna in the 1851 census

Where born   Cork, Ireland

I have found a possible baptism
Mary Ann Warrington
Baptism Date   9 Dec 1816
Baptism Place   St Leonard's, Shoreditch, Hackney, England
Father   Thomas Warrington a coachman
Mother   Sarah Warrington
Abode shown as Providence Row but I am not convinced this is the right one, I cannot find one in Marylebone with a father Thomas who is a ropemaker.

Any help to clarify Mary Ann Warringtons parents or anything else gratefully accepted.

One more post and you will be able to reply to PMs!

Are you on Ancestry?

According to my research Thomas Holloway and his family, including Ivy arrived in Toronto in 1914.  I have assumed that she met John Malcolm Moffat in Canada, I don't have a record of their marriage - I have found Canadian research tricky

Hi Jocelyn,

I will pm you.  However, I think you may have to make a couple more posts before you can reply.

I think we are 3rd cousins.  I have lots of information about the family of Ivy Miriam Holloway.

Thank you both for all the help, sympathy with my confusion and confirmation of my findings.

Good thought re. Elizabeth being Charlotte's mother will investigate further.  She certainly seems a little confused as to place of birth - so far I have Hertfordshire and Clerkenwell so Cheshire?
