Derry (Londonderry) / Re: William Caldwell & Sarah Morrison

Thank you for the information.   Guess that's why it's been a dead end over here.   There is no further info here, I've exhausted all sources.

Derry (Londonderry) / William Caldwell & Sarah Morrison
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 01:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any church records of William Caldwell, who married Sarah Morrison.   I believe they were from the First Dunboe Presby church.   William was one of the defenders of Londonderry in the late 1600's.    He, Sarah, and their children left for New England in August 1718, landing in Massachusetts, and settling just west of Worcester, MA in a small town called Barre.

They brought with them a note from their parish:
"The bearer, William Caldwell, and his wife, Sarah Morrison, with his children, being designed to go to New England in America - These are therefore to testifie that they leave us without scandal, lived with us soberly and inoffensively, and may be admitted to Church priviledges.  Given at Duboe, Aprile 9, 1718 by James Woodside Jr, minister."

I would like to find possibly his birth record to find out who his parents were, or if there is a record of their marriage (abt 1710).  According to our records, William was born 1684.   He died in Barre, MA in 1783 at the age of 99!

This is my husband's direct-line ancestor and there is no information that I can find going back behind William.

Thank you kindly for your assistance!

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Looking for John Hodgkinson b. 17 Sept 1821 "Wolwich"

No, the only mention of his birth is in the old history written by my great aunt in 1976.  I think there is a family Bible somewhere that she got this info from, but I haven't yet located it.

John and Elizabeth were married in "the Parish Church in the Parish of Radford in the county of Nottingham."

Both John and Elizabeth are listed as living in Kensington at the time of their marriage.   It looks as though John's profession at the time was Cotton spinner, or maybe both were cotton spinners?   The words "Cotton spinner" are written the full length of the box , where as the rest of the info is neatly on its own lines (his and hers).

William Hodgkinson is a "framework spinner"  and Joseph Kay is a cotton spinner. (The fathers)

Elizabeth was born "in Fritchley, near Crich."  I have found online records of Crich parish, and found Hay and Hey, as well as a few Key/Kay listings.

Witnesses were John Charles and Elizabeth Charles.

The minister's name is hard to read, Samuel something....surname might start with a J and ends in "ell", and then following his name is ", K ........." again, unreadable.  Maybe  title or suffix?  "K _ in" ??  Dunno, no idea what it should say, so can't begin to guess.

The only other line is:
"Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, _________________ by me, ___________

I think the first line says "by Bannes" or "by Banus"

I have it scanned, if you wish to see it, I can email you the scan.

Just wondering if you now have some marriage details which might help in progressing with the origins of John HODGKINSON ???

Casalguidi :)

I finally have the marriage certificate.

John Hodgkinson's father was William Hodgkinson, a framework knitter.  I believe this family to have been in the Woolwich area, based on a family history typed in 1976.

The marriage of John Hodgkinson and Elizabeth Hey occured in the Parish of Radford, and they were both living in Kensington at the time of marriage.

I've tried Googling "William Hodgkinson" Woolwich and come up with nothing.

One other thing I found that might help in locating this family:

there was a card in the Bible (I have not seen it), with a picture of a church and is labelled "The Catholic church of Nottingham."

Inside the card, written to John Hodgkinson by his "Aunt Eliza and Uncle Thomas," it mentions that the church is on Tollhouse hill, "opposite Vernon street, where we used to live."   (I assume this to be the former residence of "Aunt Eliza & Uncle Thomas" .... but could possibly be a former residence of one of John's parents as a child....and whichever is related by blood, Aunt Eliza or Uncle Thomas."

In Googling this info, I found this cathedral:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nottingham_Cathedral

So this is where possibly one of John's parents grew up?   Dunno........i'm grasping at straws here. :)

This is what I know of the marriage:
John Hodgkinson was born at Wolwich near London, Sept 17, 1821.
He married Elizabeth Hay, b. 5 Mar 1823 in "Frickley (?Brickley), near Crich (?Erich) in Derbyshire."

They were married on 30 Nov 1845.

They were married in England before they immigrated.

This is from a relative's transcription of the John Hodgkinson/Elizabeth Hay family Bible.

Pam,
FANTASTIC news!!  I have found a gentleman in Scotland who is of this family!!! :) :)  Yes, William Paterson and Katherine Bell are the parents of James.   I have some info on sibblings now, and am working backwards.   Once I get it all together, I'll send it along to you.

Were it not for the internet and the posting of those Bible pages, I don't think I'd have ever fit this together, nor found the gentleman in Scotland (who is a 73yr old Paterson).  :)

More soon!
