There are a bunch of old maps of York online.

The first half-dozen I looked at wanted 11 pounds to look at more closely.   If you persist with that,  you might find a free one.

Will do thanks ..... George's father was a staymaker so the family probably leased some of the building mentioned above or a building in the area for work and living .....

Actually,  if it was used in reference to other people as well,   you will find that it refered to a particular street or precinct within the town or parish.   The Rackett is probably around the corner from the Shambles, the Maze or the Warren.     This church is in the middle of the old town of York.

This seems to make sense and is probably very much a local saying for the location.  I did a little more search with your help and found a reference online to the York Minster Archives as follows;

*** a lease of the north part of tenement in Petergate (in the parish of St Michael-le-Belfrey), known as the 'Old Rackett',***

It would be nice to find a map of some description so it is worth a visit to the Borthwick Institute at some stage in the future.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello all,

I have searched online but have been unable to find the definition for the following phrase;

'in the Rackett'

Ref Birth - Date; 10 Nov 1755 / Name; George son of Thomas Stephenson in the Rackett / Location; St Michael le Belfry, Yorkshire, England.

It is mentioned quite a few times with other people as well within the parish records.

Many thanks

The mystery deepens further.

To summarise and to also add a little extra info-

I know that John Holmes was English and had travelled to SA on a ship called Devonia just prior to the outbreak of the Boer War.  After the war he married Elizabeth Pretorius and they had at least 3 children in SA and 7 more in New Zealand.

Son - John Roland Holmes born Vyrheid approx 18 Nov 1904
Dau - Enid Maude Holmes born Pietersmaritzburg, 7 Dec 1905
Son - Thos (Listed on ship bound for NZ, see below)

Her Son, John Roland Holmes, South African birth certificate (courtesy of my Nanna) stating; Born; Vryheid, 18 Nov 1904, Parents; European

One of her other daughter's New Zealand birth certificate, (my Nanna), stating; - Born; 29 Jan 1921 / Father; John Holmes (Occupation; Tailor, Age; 52, Birthplace; Tavistock, Devon, England) / Mother; Elizabeth Holmes (Age; 38, Birthplace; Babango, Zululand, SA)

Elizabeth's New Zealand death certificate stating; - Died; 27 Oct 1960 / Age; 76 / Born; Pretoria, SA, 50yrs in NZ / Married; Johannasburg, SA, Age; 21, to John Holmes

They both then emigrated to NZ in 1907 on the St Corinthic leaving Plymouth 27 Jul 1907 destined for Wellington NZ, details from the passenger list; - John Holmes (Tailor, 35yrs), Elizabeth (Wife, 24yrs), John (Son, 3yrs), Heuda (Dau, 2yrs), Thos (Son, 1yr)

And as a curiosity my Nanna has the following personally written note in her documents; - Monuments Commission, Around his Tree, Commandant General A W F Pretorious, members of the Volkstand, and the b??ghers of the Republic of Natalia, Decided by a majority on 5th July 1842, To accept British Rule.  For what reason she has this note, she cannot yet recall.

If I was to obtain them, what information do birth and marriage certificates have on them in South Africa?  Do they normally list parent names and details

Do birth certificates normally omit the parents names?

Once again all your help is much appreciated,

Kind regards,

Aaron

Hi all,

Thank you to the the above people for their responses, I have tried to contact the South African Archives but with no luck.

It has been a while but further information regarding Elizabeth Pretorius has become available that I thought may help someone in helping us to find information on her parents, some is a little contradictory .....

We have Elizabeth's New Zealand death certificate stating;

Died; 27 Oct 1960 / Age; 76 / Born; Pretoria, SA, 50yrs in NZ / Married; Johannasburg, SA, Age; 21, to John Holmes

Her daughter's New Zealand birth certificate stating;

 - Father; John Holmes (Occupation; Tailor, Age; 52, Birthplace; Tavistock, Devon, England) / Morther; Elizabeth Holmes (Age; 38, Birthplace; Babango, Zululand, SA)

If no one can help find the information can anyone recommend a good researcher that I may contact?

Thanks to all again,

Ireland / Help Finding A Source Reference
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 14:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I was wondering if someone could help?

I am trying to find out where the source for the following information is likely to be located.  The source below is from the book 'An Historical Account of Diocese of Down and Conner' Pages 248 & 249

The territory out of which Charles II constituted the manor of Hillsborough and Growle had been the patrimony of a branch of the Magennisses family, named MacRory, which had fought in defence of Charles I.  The relationship which existed between MacRory, or Magennis of Kilwarlin, and Magennis, Lord of Iveagh, is shown by Dr Reeves, Eccl.Hist., p389.

"Art, surnamed na madhman, or of the overthrows who flourished A.D.1380, had two sons, Aodh and Cathbar; from the former of whom the Lords of Iveagh were descended, while the Kilwarlin brach derived its origin from the latter.  In 1575 Ever MacRory of Kilwarlyn made a surrender of this tract to Queen Elizabeth and took out a patent for the name, which original document is in possession of Goerge Stephenson, Esq., of Lisburn, whose maternal ancestors were of this race."

Reference the above;

Where would "the original document in the possession of George Stephenson Esq" be located?

Where can I find the book "Dr Reeves, Eccl.Hist., p389."?

The reason for this, is that I am trying to expand George's mothers side of the family tree so that I can link the Stephensons to the Magennis of Iveagh.

Many thanks, regards

Hello all,

The info I am after is for the father of a child baptised in Ballytrim, Ireland.  Child number 403 called Matilda.

First name is William
Second name is Howe

It is the word below that I am having problems with and it is the 'Dwelling Place of Father'.  I have scanned Google Maps but have been unsuccessful.

Also having trouble with the informants Eliza's surname details as I believe she is not the mother of the child.

Many thanks

Down / Re: Stephenson's of Down

Hi Fran,

It is great to hear from you.  I have just had the great pleasure of Rosemary's company just out of Edinburgh the other week and we had a great morning of conversation re the Stephensons.  I will email her that you are interested  and no doubt she will be interested also in what information you have.

I mentioned in a post that I had Birth and Death dates for John but I do not have any certificates.

I have been to the archives in Ireland and have found lots of information that is also in the book that Rosemary mentions.

Generally George and John's father John was born in Ireland.  His father George was born in York, Yorkshire, married and then moved to County Down, Northern Ireland where is first wife Amelia Brooks died.  He remarried Eliz McKay to whom we are descended from.  George Snr was an Agent/Secretary for the Earl of Downshire for some 40ish years.  His son John worked for the Bank of Ireland as you know.

George Jnr first trip to NZ was in 1950.

I am looking for as much information I can get re the Baron Of Ivaugh before I visit the archives again so any info you have would be of great help.

If you pass me your email details I would be glad to help you in furthering your search.

Cheers
Aaron
