Hi Julie-Anne, the evidence is on the last page of Thomas Dainty's Will. Probate was finally granted to the surviving Executor (John Dainty) on 27 December 1902 after a High Court ruling on 17 December 1902 in the case of Dainty & Coren v. Oakey. I have always felt that Jane was the Oakey named, since she was Thomas's niece and his only surviving close relative, his wife, parents and siblings being already dead. I still cannot work out his relationship to John Dainty after many years of searching, although I have done a considerable amount of work on John's family.

Hope this helps, and if you are able to shed any further light on the whole matter, I would be very grateful.

Also buried at Maisemore

        5/6/1868 Nancy Dainty aged 91 (this, I think, is Anne Evans)
        1/2/1871 Elizabeth Dainty aged 71 - she is the wife of Thomas (below)
        25/7/1902 Thomas Dainty aged 81 - this is the one born in 1815

Thomas Dainty Snr, & his wife Anne, Thomas Dainty Jnr & his wife Elizabeth, Ann Dainty (1809 - 1826) & Jane Dainty (1813 - 1834) are all buried at Maisemore, Glos., and have gravestones there. Thomas Jnr & Elizabeth have stained glass windows to their memory in Maisemore Church.

Hello Victor,

I believe that the parents of Thomas Dainty (born 1815) were Thomas Dainty & Anne Evans, who were married on 10 November 1806 at Eldersfield, Worcestershire. I got this from the Family Search website. In addition to Thomas, they were the parents of Ann (1809 - 1826). Jane (1813 - 1834) and John (1818 - 1843). Neither Ann nor Jane married. John married and named his first son Thomas Evans Dainty - which seems to indicate that Anne Evans is probably correct. Thomas Evans Dainty was born in 1838 and died the following year. His siblings were James (b. & d. 1843) and Jane (born 1840). Jane married George Oakey, and contested the Will of Thomas Dainty (1815 - 1902), but lost her case.

How are you related to them? As I have previously mentioned, I am not related to them, but I share the same surname, and was born in Gloucester.

Hello Kevin  :) How wonderful to find someone who my have the answer to my question! Although I am not related to either Thomas or John, they have intrigued me for years, and I return to my investigations every so often in the hope that inspiration will strike. I have quite a lot of information about John's family, and a certain amount about his wife Sarah (who was born Dainty). I obtained Thomas' Marriage Certificate, and he married Elizabeth Sprigings. They had no children. On Thomas' funeral report published in Gloucester Citizen, John is named as his nephew, but that is the only indication I have from anywhere that the two of them are actually related. I would be so pleased to hear any information you have which links them.

I'm a new member, just browsing through the boards, and I came across this topic. The Sceats Memorial Home is in Kenilworth Avenue, Gloucester. It originally came into being because various churches in the area wanted to open a residential home for retired church members. Mr. Caleb Sceats of Gloucester provided a large house for the purpose after local fund-raising efforts had failed to reach their target.  I believe it was originally in memory of his late wife. I know all this because my late mother was involved in the fund-raising. I don't think Mr. & Mrs. Sceats had any children to which the property could be left - but I am open to correction on this.

Update - thanks to the pointer you gave me towards Hertfordshire, I found (via IGI) an Elizabeth Sprigings born in Codicote in 1799. She got married in 1847, in Marylebone, and Freebmd gives one of her possible husbands as Thomas Dainty. So I've bitten the bullet and ordered her Marriage Certificate - gosh, £9-25!! When I started researching back in the 1970s, they were 75p!  :o

Thank you, lizdb, for the information you have posted. I am inclined to agree with you that Elizabeth brought the money to the marriage. Thomas left in the region of £25,000 when he died in 1902. I have a copy of his Will; it's very long and detailed, but mentions no relatives. John Dainty of Leicester (executor and beneficiary) is not acknowledged as a relative, and the Will throws no light on how they knew each other. John's Will is similarly unhelpful! Many years ago, I saw a newspaper report of Thomas's funeral - he was buried with what appeared to be Druid ceremonial.

I have traced John's immediate family - his mother came from Scottlethorpe in Lincolnshire, and he named one of the houses which Thomas bequeathed to him "Scottlethorpe". The book of poetry which John wrote contains his autobiography, but only refers to Thomas in the dedication, and at the very end, when he mentions being called to Gloucester because Thomas was seriously ill.

I have accounted for all the Maisemore family, and they all belong to Thomas. Jane (aged 5 months in 1841), was his niece, and disputed Thomas's Will, but lost the case.

I find it interesting that Elizabeth, Thomas's wife, was 46 in 1851, and 61 in 1861 (and 71 when she died in 1871). There are two very similar parishes in Herts where she might have been born - Codicote and Caldecote, which I must investigate.

Anyway, thank you again. As I said, I don't think I am related to him, but just find him fascinating and would really like to find the "missing link" to solve the mystery.

Hello, I'm new here. My maiden surname was Dainty, and I am related in some way or another to practically every Dainty in the Gloucester area. EXCEPT ONE! Thomas Dainty (b. Redmarley 1815) was responsible for building a great many houses in the Tredworth area of Gloucester, and was also well thought of in the city. His wife's name was Elizabeth, but I have been unable to find out her maiden name or the date of their marriage. Elizabeth died in 1871, aged 71. Both she and Thomas are buried at Maisemore, and both have a dedicated stained-glass window in Maisemore Church.

I am fairly sure that I am not actually related to them, but Thomas has fascinated me for many years. He left a considerable amount of his estate to a John Dainty of Leicester. I have not been able to establish the precise connection between them, but I have a book of poetry by John Dainty, in the foreward to which he describes Thomas Dainty as some kind of benefactor.

I would be very grateful for any information which might shed some light on any of this. Thank you in anticipation.
