Thanks for the info. I have looked at the census etc that you have given  - all i have to do now is sit down with a large sheet of paper and see if I can sort them out... There seem to be more Bunnings that I thought!

Many thanks David; it seems another family story may turn out to be misleading! I'll investigate further. Mary is on my paternal side; on the maternal side there are are Irish connections as well - but as you have mentioned; my Great-grandfather was a bandsman in the Connaught Rangers, born in London, he joined up at 14 and a half. One of his children was born in Ireland. His father-in-law, also in the regiment was born in Surrey.
My DNA result did come back as 12% Irish and Scottish, but I guess most people in the UK would be that too!

Yes, I looked at the signature carefully, I think it is Bunning, so possibly a father or brother. I was hoping the parish record would give a father's name so I could confirm as Irish root, but of course it is pre-1837... One of their daughters was said to have an Irish accent and smoked a clay pipe - would have loved to have met her!

Lincolnshire / Mary Bunning born 1792

The above named married my 3x greatgrandfather, Thomas Gray in Stamford in 1813 on the 9th of November; information I have been given was she was born in Dungarvan Ireland. On the parish record from St Michael's, one of the witnesses was Joseph Bunning - possibly here father or brother? I would like to confirm that she was born in Ireland as there seem to be several Bunning's in Stamford at the time who give their place of birth as there on later censuses. Does anyone here share this ancestor?

Surrey / Re: George Joyce born 1850

Thank you everyone for the help so far. Unfortunately there is no clue to an address, only place of birth. He signed up in Westminster in 1864 aged 14 and a half, so I imagine the family were either poor or one parent. His final resting place is in an unmarked grave in Gosport, Hampshire, along with his wife and two young children who are unrelated to them. I believe it was the custom to use a recent unmarked grave for such burials; Kate, George's wive died in 1924, the children within a year of that.

Surrey / George Joyce born 1850

My Great-Great-Grandfather George Joyce was born in St Georges, Surrey, in 1850, according to his Army record. He served with the 88th Regt. of Foot/1st Batt. Connaught Rangers, joining up in 1864. I have a copy of his records and his marriage certificate from 1872, which states his father is Thomas Joyce (deceased), undertaker. So far I have drawn a blank on Thomas, any early census George appears on, or other members of his family.
Has anyone else got George or Thomas in their family tree?
His daughter married Herbert Child and that branch I have got back to families in Sussex in the 1600's, be nice to find out about the Joyce family too.

Armed Forces / Re: 88th Connaught Rangers

i have two ancestors who were in the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers/88th Regiment of Foot.
A great-great grandfather George Joyce, who joined up in 1864 aged 14 years and 5 months, and my great-grandfather, Herbert Child, born 1865 (his son-in-law). Both of them were in the band.
I have George's records downloaded ( very tatty and damaged), but nothing for Herbert. I suspect he served in the Boer War, as two of his children were born in Ireland at that time; both Herbert and George were from London originally.
Herbert married George's daughter in Dinapore, India in 1890. One of those coincidences that occur in family history is that in 1975 when doing the 'hippy thing' in India I had to get discount on a rail ticket back to Delhi. To obtain it I had to travel from Patna to the District Railway HQ a few miles down the line - at Dinapore!
I would love to know when Herbert joined up and left, or any details of his career. We suspect he played (in the band) for Queen Victoria in 1875 at the opening of the Town Hall; a brush with Royalty!
Does anyone have him in their family tree and can fill in the blanks?

Lincolnshire / Thomas Gray 1765
« on: Friday 09 July 10 09:19 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks to members who have got me back to Thomas Gray in 1765. I suspect he lived in Morton by Bourne and he married a lady named Ann. Any other member have him in their trees?
My maternal side has made progress; now I am trying to go as far as I can on the paternal side before I have to take a trip to Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841/1851 census lookup please Abraham Rush

I have been tracing back the Grays (James, son of Thomas and Mary was my great-great-grandfather). As far as I have been able to find out, his older brother Thomas was still unmarried in his 60's. Jame's son Thomas married Rebecca; in the 1901 census they are shown as having the following children - Charles, Emily, Ernest, Annie and James.
Hope this is some help.
