Dublin / Mary Josephine Fitzgerald
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Mary Josephine Fitzgerald was my great-great-aunt, and I'm intrigued to know what happened to her. She turned up on the 1901 census, aged 19, but she wasn't on the 1911 census. I know she most likely got married, but I'd love to know what happened to her. She lived at 173, Great Brunswick Street (now Pearse Street) in 1901.

If anyone finds anything, the help would be greatly appreciated, since I want to know did she just move out, did she get married, or did she die. On the 1911 census Thomas and Lucinda were listed as having had 14 children, but that only 11 were still alive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much! This is going to make for a very interesting project =)

I think the only one who wasn't involved in the War of Independence must have been William, since he would have only been 5 in 1916. And perhaps Theobald.

Thanks again, this is a great help  :)

Any information on this family would be very useful. I'm trying to find information on my family during the War of Independence for my Leaving Cert. Research Topic for history. Information on James Fitzgerald and Leo Patrick Fitzgerald would be particularly useful.

Here's what I do know:
James Fitzgerald
  • Was involved in 1916 Rising and was in Bolands Mill.
  • Married Kathleen Geraghty in 1917/18 or thereabouts.
    • May have been a pallbearer at Michael Collins's funeral, but I can't be sure; that's just what my dad told me.
    • Was Lt. Col. James Fitzgerald of 3 Battalion of the IRA in Dublin.
    Leo Fitzgerald
    • Was also in IRA and in Bolands Mill in 1916.
    • Was shot in 1921 by Black and Tans on Greater Brunswick street. This event has been mentioned by Sean MacBride.

I'm afraid that's all I know. If anyone could find anything out about Kathleen Geraghty and her family that would be great as well.

    Census for Fitzgerald family:

Census for Geraghty family: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Usher_s_Quay/Bow_Bridge/73996/

That's everything I know. hanks so much to anyone who finds anything in advance.

All the sights I've been on don't give too much in the way of names of people other than who you looked up. Anyone have any sites they can reccomend?

They are not in the names on my picture of F company which was taken in the '40's or '50's.  You should take a look at the Bureau of Military Affairs website and see did your relations make any witness  statements.  Our former Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald's family were of course very important during the 1916 Rebellion and the War of Independence.  Dont know if you are related to them.
Leo Fitzgerald was shot in 1922. His uniform used to be on display in Collins' Barracks, but I was there a couple of weeks ago and didn't see it (mind you, the place is huge so I might have missed it and it might be in one of the other museums, however unlikely). I'm fairly certain I'm not related to Garrett Fitzgerald, but it's a possibility. They were all pro-treaty, is it possible that's why they're not in it? Of course, it's also possible they weren't able to come for the photo or had died.

James Fitzgerald, Leo Patrick Fitzgerald and Kathleen 'Kitty' Fitzgerald, not sure of her maiden name but she was James' wife. I don't know if they were in the battalion you're talking about, but they were all very involved in the IRA.

I think to start with, if this was supposed to have happened before she was married, that you will need to find her maiden name- marriage certificate or children's birth certificates will give you that.
That's the problem, I'm not sure when she married my gt grandfather.

The result for Leo Fitzgerald was in 1945 and I don't even know if that's right. It probably is though. Just so you know, that site isn't hugely accurate, it said my gran was born a year later than she actually was.

My grandmother's first name was Patricia, but I don't know if it's the same Patricia since my dad cant remember her maiden name (hopeless, right?). Do you know the name of the man she married?
