Hi Erin..

First of all, let me sort out the family dynamics for you.
Mathew Forrest Shine > father of Col. James Mathew Forrest Shine (Dr.).
                                > Cousin to Dr. James A Forrest, Charters Towers.
Dr James MF Shine Col. > brother-in-law/ 2nd cousin to Dr James A Forrest & Dr Robert B Huxtable, also of Charters Towers - Brother-in-law to Col. James MF Shine.. (keep an eye out for that name).

Col. James MF Shine, had 3 sons that served in the Great War, they all fell within months of each other. James Owen Williams Shine was a Capt. of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion. Perhaps this is the 'Forrest son' that your looking for. Forrest is the middle name, not hyphened.. which has confused a few researchers; so it would be the son of Dr James MF Shine... Who then contacted his cousin/in-law, for some assistance.

Dr James A Forrest's son, Capt HS Forrest served in the Medical Corp in Aust... but I think your best bet is the sons of Col. James MF Shine...

Let me know if you need anymore info .. and love to hear how you go.. as I'm still surprised as to how much contact the Irish & Australian families had.... Cheers.

Australia / Re: Lost in Queensland (I think!!)

Hi all...

I'll put my hand up for Harriet Pierpoint (married Skeates). She would be my Aunt's grandmother. Unfortunately, she never knew too much about her father's side of the family till recently.
George would have had to pay of his family's passage for about two years service.... but where???? As for Stanthorpe... James (s/o George) obtained first land there in 1878.  The 1903 electrole roll has James, John thomas & Samuel as blacksmiths (maybe working with the mine) with George as a labourer & Harry a storeman. 1905 role is pretty much the same. One of the Pierpoint's had a successful sawmill in Stanthorpe.
On whole the family was very quite with little new articles. It isn't till about the 1880's till the family make the news. Visit TROVE and you can find online newpapers and some photo's.
Hope there is some info that might help ...

Have a happy Christmas all...  :D :D

Down / Re: RICE, Gilford

HI Bally...
I have looked through RosDavies site and now can try to put some odd names together ... For instance, have found a Hans Rice living near John rice that came to Aust in 1850's. John Rice researcher has him from Ballynagarrick. Hans (listed as Hans on death/will notice & marriage & death cert) Rice get John's son-in-law to sort the details of his will.

Hans is such a unique name. Robert Rice of NZ shares a block of land with a Hants Rice (changes to Hans). robert  is highly suspected of being John's brother.

From ros site .. Hans s/o thomas and James s/o Hans... Sarah (aka widow Bartley) d/o Hans... James & Sarah marry siblings? on the same day... mmm was there a hurry too.. eg. immigration.

Thanks for your help... cheers

Hi...
If your looking for another Toppin/topham for the Ballydougan area, I have and Eliza/beth Topping marrying James Rice in Nov 1841, form Knockmuckley records. These Rices (My forefathers) were Ch of England/Ireland. Eliza & James sons (William & Robert) were sponsored to NSW, Aust. By 1857, on a church survey Eliza is ??? and James is listed as '(father) in America', sons split and living with uncles in Ballynagarrick.
Cheers

Hi King... So sorry for not getting back... but I gave up on looking for any Rice information, as all I was hitting was brickwalls.
Butttt... Within the last month new information has been opened in Ancestry and I can now tell you that William (1844) & Robert (1846) came from Ballynagarrick, Co Down. Another researcher had information from Knockamuckley Church that these boys were living (separately) with uncles in Ballynagarrick. William (15) lived with uncle William (42) & family. Robert (11) lived with John (50 - farmer) and family. John's 2 sons immigrated to NZ in the 1860's and 2 possible sons ended up in VIC, Aust.
John (s/o John) married Sarah Patton in Armagh and is listed as Ch o E. Will (1844- Aust; 1842-Ballyna) & Robert (1846) are listed as Ch o E.
There was an entry for a James Rice marrying and Eliza/beth Toppin (Topham more likely, they lived Ballydougan) in Nov 1841, which fits for William's Irish dates.
Interestingly... the entries in the Church survey of 1857 lists the father of William & Robert as 'father in America'. Once upon a time, I did find a message looking for a James Rice who had to leave Co Down under suspicious circumsatnces. they listed John rice SR and James's father and John Rice JR as brother (these would be the Rice's of Ballynagarrick from the Valuation). I recall that they said their family legend was that James arrived in the USA, under a different name because he may have been wanted for doing something to his Landlord.
Also, a HANS rice lived near John Rice (s/o John) and had one of John's sons-in-law look after his will.
Once again sorry for not getting back sooner... and if anyone can find/recall information on a James rice who maybe fled Co. Down to USA... before 1857... Would love to hear from you...
Cheers..

Thank yo all for replying

I finally found the Commonwealth War Site.... and went through the names... what a shame he lost 3 sons.

Could anyone point in the right direction of any records on their father Colonel James M F (Matthew Forrest?) Shine, he was surgeon in the British military.. serving from campaigns from Boer to WW I. 2 of his sisters married doctors.... one was Huxtable (was at Gallipoli) and the 2nd James Forrest, both from Australia. James was a distant cousin.

Cheers Trish

Waterford / Shine family of Dungarvan
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 03:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi there..
I am trying to find more information on the Shine family of Dungarvan. They are listed in the census at Strandside St S. What I would like more information on is the sons that were lost in WW I. 3 sons were lost in the Great War and I'm at a loss to find more information about them.

Also, information on colonel James M F Shine, Royal Army Medical Corps. Trying to find if his father was, Matthew Forrest Shine. It seems that Doctors played a part in the family's history. Matthew's daughter Josephine married James A Forrest (Australia) who was a Doctor and was visiting Ireland in 1901 (census). There is another Shine family in Kilcommon More, North; Tipperaray. With children born in Malta... this could be the travelling Dr. family.

Any help would be great
Cheers Trish
