I'm assuming it was this death:

Jane EBENEZER March qtr 1869 Tregaron (11b/60) aged 12.

Shropshire Lass has the certificate.

Need to have my glasses checked, I knew it was 1868.  :-[

 :)

I have a death cert from 1846 which says cause "unknown, no medical attendant".

That's exactly what's on Jane's certificate.

I've never seen it before but it's good to know that it's a phrase that was used.

That's the one - but the year was 1868.

What was her name? I know you said you have looked for a newspaper account, happy to look in newspapers I have access to.

That's kind of you.

Jane Ebenezer, died 10th March 1868 in Llangeitho, Cardiganshire, aged 12.
Informant: David Pugh of Llangeitho, present at the death.

The reports I have aren't around the times of the war and don't give any reason for the wedding being 'quiet'.

A Medical Certificate stating cause of death wasn't required until 1874.

In 1926, an Act of Parliament made it unlawful to dispose of a dead body before a registrar's certificate or a coroner's order had been issued.

When was your death?

Jane's death was in 1868.

I have other death certificates from around that time and there has always been a cause of death stated.

This is the first time I've seen "Unknown. No medical attendant" given in the cause of death box on a certificate.

Other sudden deaths I've seen have always been investigated by the coroner.

This is on the death certificate of a 12 year girl and the informant was an uncle who was "in attendance" at the death.

I haven't been able to find any newspaper reports relating to the case.

Sometimes finding things out just raises more questions!

Was this some sort of code that everyone at the time would have understood or is my imagingation running away with me?

You mean something like "Arranged in a great hurry so not enough time to invite a more extensive guest list" ?

That is along the lines I was thinking!

Google search meaning

A "quiet wedding" or "intimate wedding" means a wedding with a smaller guest list, often focusing on the couple and their closest family and friends, emphasizing a more personal and less formal celebration.

That's understandable.  I was curious as to whether the phrase could have had a colloquial meaning above and beyond just describing the size of the wedding party.
