Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: BUSH family of Bitton
« on: Thursday 17 February 11 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Jamys,
Happy to hear from you.
I couldn't find widow Eliza in 1911 and don't have any children for her/Albert.
Have you seen the picture of Eliza Lavinia's sister, Marcia BUSH Milton, on the bittonfamilies website?  It was submitted by a grandson of Marcia's daughter, 1887 Lily Milton (so, 3rd cousin to your MLaw).  Lily is the visitor with Eliza/Albert in 1901.
Please feel free to write directly.

Gloucestershire / Re: JOHN CANTLE

Hi Janet,

These were the only John CANTLE's noted.

There is no more information with the burials.  When I saw the 1868 entry, I almost skipped it.  But, if your John married on February 1, it's possible that he died in May -- and possible that his child was born about the same time.

Hmm.  Have you checked Bigland's for MIs?  Or the Bristol and/or Gloucestershire Archives for wills?  Or A2A for PCC wills?  Maybe try Googling "John CANTLE" to see what hits come up?  It could pick up postings in multiple forums/lists (how I was led to this forum).  If you're really stuck and can't find what you need via online sources, have you considered paid research?  I've had wonderful help that way as well.

Best of Luck,
Marsha

Hi,

Happy to help.

I took a peek to see if I could find the baptism of Stephen, the father -- but no luck in any of the included parishes.  Guessing he was born before 1754 (start of the CD range).

The CDs are great.  This project made a dent in a 40-year brick wall for my MEERE family.  In the Vol 9 marriages the 1754 marriage (Winterbourne) of my 5xG grandfather magically appeared.  It was in a cluster of marriages that were apparently entered in one parish book, but not transferred to the main book.  It was only thanks to the re-indexing for the CDs that the marriage was finally revealed.

Happy Searching,
Marsha

Hi,

I'm Marsha, of the bittonfamilies site.  We have only some transcriptions, Bitton only for now.

Bitton area BMD information is in Bristol and there are now CDs by the BAFHS (Bristol and Avon Family History Society)
     www.bafhs.org.uk

I checked my copies of the CDs and found:

Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers, Vols 11 to 14; Index and Transcripts 1754-1812
Parents Stephen/Rebecca BRITTEN had the following children bap Hanham
Richard     6/6/1773
Diana       5/7/1775
Lucy        10/12/1777
Mary        1/26/1783
Samuel   1/26/1783
Stephen   3/19/1786
Joseph   6/20/1790

Bristol Diocese Marriage Registers, Vol 9; Groom & Bride Indexes & Transcripts 1754-1812
Stephen BRITTEN m. Rebecca BISSICKS 6 Apr 1772, Bitton (Ba/Spin; both otp)

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Marsha

Hi Jamys,

It's now two years later (2010), and I've just discovered this Forum.  I'm Marsha of the bittonfamilies site and cousin to Martin -- so cousin to you, too.  Martin and I are of 1768 Mary's sister, 1774 Nancy THOMPSON; 1743 James THOMPSON / Rebecca nee BUTLER were their parents.  Both BUSH and THOMPSON are personal lines.

If you're still on the Forum, I'd love to hear from you via PM as well.

Several of us have worked together on the BUSH family.  We're fairly comfortable that Samuel is the son of Laurence BUSH & Mary HARDING, bap 13 Sep 1747, St. Mary's, Bitton.  But, we can't go beyond Laurence.  One of our group collected some BMD info, but it's a listing of events/dates and remains speculative.

We know there's a substantial BUSH file on the IGI saying the John BUSH, husband of Mary THOMPSON was a s/o John, s/o 1677 William BUSH/Eleanor nee ENGLAND and married to Susannah BRIGHT.  William/Eleanor's son, 1726 John, died in 1760, unmarried.  We have his MI from St. Mary's and his PCC Will is posted on the bittonfamilies site.  There is a John BUSH to Susannah BRIGHT marriage, but that John is not yet identified/placed.  Getting this sorted took a while, so we're trying to be very careful about putting other pieces together.

So you have it:
St.Mary, Bitton, Glos. Marriage register 1754, 1793
1793 Apr 07 John BUSH bachelor & Mary THOMPSON spinster, both of this parish, by banns [Both signed, as did witnesses Sarah Creswicke CLARKE, John WRIGHT]

Samuel's 1809 will extract (on the site), names son John BUSH and one if the witnesses is John THOMPSON (Mary's brother).  Son John's 1823 will is also on the site.

For some reason, I show Eliza Lavinia as Lavinia Eliza?  Did she marry Albert Henry BLOWETT?

Our joint THOMPSONs are from Newland.  Do you have other families there?  Have you discovered the Forest of Dean website?  It's fantastic.

www.forest-of-dean.net

Hope to hear from you.

Regards,
Marsha

Hi Jan,

I'm new to this site/Forum and you may already have found your answer.  Just in case, here are death indexes from Bristol & Avon Family History Society (BAFHS)

Website: bafhs dot org dot uk

Bristol diocese Burial Registers, Vol 3, Index and Transcripts 1754-1812
CANTLE JOHN 19.08.1762 ST.JAMES ST.MICHAEL 1C 5 25 54
CANTLE JOHN 24.05.1768 BITTON

an Anna CANTLE is entered in Bitton on 9.08.1768

The entries give no further details.

The BAFHS website also included an online Burial Index (1813-1866).

Regards,
Marsha Stringer

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

Question 1: I thought there was a way to reply off-list (Personal Message? Email?), but don't see any link/s within your posted message, this reply format or in your profile.

I didn't see a way to directly contact you as GLS list moderator, so replied to one of your recent postings.

Greetings,

New to Rootschat and trying to contact arranroots, noted as the Gloucestershire moderator.  Used to Rootsweb lists and finding this format confusing.
