Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Is anyone researching Flyng family?
« on: Sunday 16 February 14 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Vicky, I havent come across and Elizabeth Flyng in my research.  My GG Catherine Flyng was born in 1826 in Bristol, mother Hannah father Michael and pretty sure, brother Timothy much older.  Timothy seemed to have a few children, Charlotte, Hannah and Carson, the latter name seems to have been carried on. Do you know who Eliz 1823 parents were.  Timothy was married in the area your Eliz Lorymore died so maybe they were all part of the one family, its just proving it thats hard.
Cheers Diane Reeves

Thanks for that.  Timothy and Family are not too hard to find but the parents are the difficult ones. I think they were so poor they were in the work house hospital.  I have tried ringing the cemeteries with no luck.  I have a death cert for Michael Flyng but not for Hannah or daughter Catherine. However I will try the papers and see what I can find.  I have the feeling that Timothy was more affluent than the rest of the family.

Hi,
Yes I do have a copy of the marriage cert for John and Catherine.  Nothing relevant to Timothy on it but if you want a copy I can scan and send to you.  Its difficult from Australia to do anything much because you cant really make too many phone calls as you would get transferred all over I'm sure. We have been to UK a few times but you cant take up too much of Partners/friends time with geneology.
I did go to maybe a library or something like that in Cork but found nothing. I went down the line of tailors but Michael and Hannah were dead poor so not much luck there.  What I cant understand is why I cant find a death cert for Hannah?  She was till alive in the 1861 listed as Anna Fling living in Pithay St Bristol. I did find a marriage cert for Timothy and Charlotte but there was nothing on it of any help.  Go onto Ancestry and you should find my tree under Wheeler/ John James and Catherine should bring it up for you.  I do have info about Timothy, Charlotte and their children etc. Any problems finding it get back to me on ajbsqld@bigpond.com
Cheers Diane Reeves

Hi cyningdun,
Michael and Hannah Flyng are listed on some of the census as coming from Cork Ireland and Timothy Flyng in Bristol who is the father of William Carson Flyng and had Kate, sister, listed on one of his census, 1861 I think.  Kate is listed as 35 yrs which corresponds with Catherine being born in 1826.  Kate (Catherine) married John James Wheeler (they are my great grandparents)  If you check out the 1841 census you will find Michael and Hannah listed with 2 children, Catherine (Kate)  born 1826 and Henry 1821 I think. I'm almost certain Timothy is a son born much earlier in Ireland. Both Michael and Timothy were tailors as well. I have a death cert for Michael, cant find where Hannah died or death cert, cant find one for Catherine but its possible she died in Portugal.
Henry is in Arnos Vale cemetery in Bristol or at least there is a Henry Flyng there.  The swapping from Flyng to Flynn doesnt help much either. I was going to employ a geneologist to look into Hannah Flyng, Catherine Flyng and Timothy Flyng but wondered if it was worth it.

HI,
Not sure if I am doing this the correct way but heres hoping! My GG Grandparents were Michael and Hannah Flyng of Cork, living in Bristol. He was a Tailor same as Timothy. What I'm wondering is if they could possible be the parents of Timothy.  They are listed in the 1851 census as Michael Hannah, Henry and Catherine. Catherine is my Great grandmother DOB 1826 Bristol. Henry died in 1850, Michael in 1859 and I cant find death record for Hannah but can find her in the 1861 census listed as Anna Fling, correct address of Pithay St. Also noted something had Kate on a census or 1861? as his sister. I was in Bristol in May 2011 and couldnt get anywhere there as far as cemetery records.

Hi,
I googled the name Catherine Flyng who is the supposed mother of CR Wheeler and it came up with the reference Somers-New Ross.  Obviously I'd better start again I think.
Thanks

Hello again,
Charles Robert Wheeler was born in Cheltenham but married in Australia and I have a copy of the original marriage certificate which is why it is confusing because the only birth cert I can find for someone of his name and supposed date of birth shows totally different parents. He went to school in Lisbon Portugal at least till he was 12 and then went to England in 1876 with a guardian Charles Henry Johnson who was an army capt in India I understand. Capt Johnson died in 1877 whilst CR Wheeler was on the merchant navy training ship Worcester. I have his entry form for the Worcester where he left in Dec 1877.  He ended up in Aust but didnt marry till he was 45yrs.  Cant find a marriage cert for the parents named on his marriage cert either
Capt James Wheeler HMS and Jane Johnson.  The guardian died in Cintra Portugal and is buried there.  I can find Capt Johnson thru various census and CR Wheeler in the 1881 census in London.  According the census records the father listed on the BC is a manservant of Capt Johnson in 1861.  John James Wheeler married Catherine Flyng after the birth of CR Wheeler in 1863 and then recorded the birth in April 1863, after that they all seem to disappear, maybe to Lisbon.  CR Wheeler's application for the Worcester shows his last school as British College, Valle du Porsira, Lisbon.  Cant find a record of that either but it may have closed up I guess.
