Essex / Re: Bott - West Mersea

Hi Essbee,
I found two Hannah Webbs on newfamilysearch.org, one chr. 24 Jul 1692 in West Mersea,Essex, the other chr. 1703 in Colchester Quaker-Nc, Essex.   Newfamilysearch has the 1692 one married to a Matthias Courtnell in 1723 in Colchester. but I think this may be incorrect.  I think it more likely that the 1692 Hannah is married to our Samuel Bott (married in 1715 aged 23, first child born 1716) and the 1703 Hannah married to Matthias Courtnell (in 1723 aged 20)
If it were the other way round then Hannah 1703 would only be 12 when she married in 1715 and age 13 when the first child was born.  Not totally impossible but unlikely.
If I'm right then newfamilysearch has given us several more generations back.

What do you think?
Regards, Robin

Yes!!!! Thank you! Thank you!.   I've searched through the online images on SEAX for hours and hours trying to find the marriage of Samuel Bott and Hannah.  Now you've given me that and his parents in one hit.  Very grateful.  I checked on SEAX for this marriage but it doesn't appear to be in Colchester St Peter so assume it must be in Peldon but the Peldon records are not on-line, only on fiche, but even then don't begin till 1725.  There is apparently a reference to an "old register" to 1724 which I assume is missing.  Looks like we'll just have to rely on the licence data.
I'll now go through the SEAX images to try to find Hannah Webb's baptism.  By the way those records show Elizabeth Bott's birth as 12th April 1721 not 4th - minor point.
There is so much info in your message, it will take me a while to digest it all.  Will reply again once I've done that.  Thanks again for your help.

No, I just found out that this Samuel and Hannah had several children born in Kirton at the same time my Samuel and Hannah were having their children in Mersea so can't be the ones.  Back to square one.  Thanks anyway.

Thanks for that t mo.  I'll check familysearch tonight when I get home to see if I can find any sign of this couple having a family in Kirton.  It certainly is a long way, it must be 160 odd miles from Mersea, but stranger things have happened.  I'll see if I can find any evidence of Samuel being a revenue man, that would certainly explain the move but then what would he be doing in Kirton?  Anyway it's given me something to check into.  Thanks again.

Essex / Re: Essex parish records online - project

Please don't give up.  My only concern was that you might be unaware of other Essex projects.  The SEAX records are great but they are not indexed or transcribed as yours are so your efforts make life so much easier for so many others.

Hi T Mo, yes, that's where I got the info about Samuel and Hannah's children but I have checked the online records for West Mersea and several other parishes round about but can't find any more info.  I most need the marriage so I can get Hannah's maiden name.

Essex / Bott - West Mersea

Hi, My ancestors Samuel Bott and his wife Hannah had several children baptised at StPeter & StPauls church West Mersea, between 1716 and 1729 but I can't find their marriage record.  I've checked a number of other local parishes but can't find either their marriage or his baptism.  Can anyone suggest where they may have come from?
Does anyone else have this family in their tree?

I assume you are talking about the online parish records at www.seax.essexcc.gov.uk under 'Essex Ancestors'.  If not, then check them out.  Many parishes in Essex have the early original parish records online, like 1560 onwards to various dates.  Some are difficult to read but you do get used to it.  There is something special about finding ones ancestors written in the original records.  The LDS church is also busy transcribing Essex records (and many others) through the familysearch indexing program.  Anyone can register to help with this, you don't have to be a member or particularly good at genealogy, just careful. and you can do it at your own pace, as much or little as you want, all from home.
Sorry, I didn't mean to sideline your post, just didn't like to think of hours of work being done in duplication.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Portsmouth forts
« on: Tuesday 22 March 11 04:19 GMT (UK)  »
FYI, there is or was also a line of forts on Portsdown Hill protecting Portsmouth and the Solent.  From west to east they are forts Fareham, Wallington, Nelson, Southwick, Widley and Purbrook. The line was finished off at the eastern end with Crookhorn Redoubt and Farlington Redoubt.  I remember passing them in the car many times as a child.
