Peter
Since your last note about John Dobson being at the Ship Inn in the 1851 census I've been trying to locate him (and wife, Mary) myself - without success.
However, I can find John there in the 1861 census with a different wife (Margaret).  Can you help?

Hi Boo,
That's absolutely brilliant!!
Thank you!
I haven't come across that site, I don't suppose I could trouble you for the address?
Thanks
Michael

Thank you.  That appears to have solved that frustrating little mystery.  I am interested that he is at the Ship Inn in 1851.  The record I found showed him living at Felling (occupation - Engineman) with his wife Ann and child, Jane.  There is no street address on the census image I saw.  However, the link to the Ship Inn is appropriate as in the 1891 census his daughter Ellen is recorded as a barmaid at the Ship Inn, working for her aunt - Mary Hogarth.  So that would tie in with the name of Thomas's sibling you have provided from the 1841 census.
Thanks again

Does anyone have any information about my great grandfather Thomas Dobson or his sons Michael or James.  Thomas was born in Westoe, South Shields circa 1829 but despite there being several 'Thomas Dobsons' I cannot find him on the 1841 census so cannot identify his mother or siblings.  I have a marriage certificate for his first marriage to Ann Cook when he was living at Rabbit Banks, Gateshead.  His father is named John with profession given as 'Agent'.
I have been able to trace Thomas from the 1851 census through to the 1891 census and I know he died in 1899.  He owned a horse slaughtering business in Walker Terrace and it seems he was also an innkeeper.

Thomas's horse slaughtering business was taken over by his sons Michael (born c1878)and James (born 1882) from his second marriage to Catherine Wheatley.  James was my grandfather and I have sketchy information about him but despite a great deal of searching I cannot discover what happened to Michael who was a favourite uncle of my father.

Thank you for the message.
I'm happy that you've had so much help with your research, because I got into it so late, 60+ when almost all the players that could have helped have died! and all you have left, are vague memories of chats with parents who were too busy surviving to worry about where they'd come from!
It's even worse when you've moved 12000 miles away from where it happened!
Good Luck,
Michael

Kind Regards,

At last, some bad weather!
Right, Your John Wake had a son, Thomas, born 7th Feb 1781, he married Elizabeth Smith of Kirk leavington (born 1784) at St.Leonard's, Welbury Yorkshire 15th march 1808. They had 3 kids, John dob Sept 1808, William dob Sept 1810, and Elizabeth Nov 1815, all born in Welbury. John married his 1st wife Ellen, abt 1835, had daughter Anne Sept 1835. Ellen dies? , and John remarries a Jane Haining born abt 1816? In Alnwick? dies about 1851, they live in Jarrow where John is shown to be in 1841 Census with daughter Anne, and cousin Ann Norman.John & Jane have two kids, William 25th March 1844, and Elizabeth 1847, both in Jarrow. John marries a widow Mary Stobbs in March 1861, have2 daughters at Bishopswearmouth Mary abt 1857, andEleanor abt1863.
My ancestor is John's son William ( mother Jane Haining), he marries Ursula Dodds, father Joseph Dodds ( see Rootchat for Durham) her dob 1844 Mount? Durham. Marry 28th June 1865. Produce 4 kids, Margaret Jane 1868 Jarrow,Joseph Dodds Wake ( my Grandfather) 12th November 1873 at Houghton le Spring ,John William Wake25/3/1877 at Easington Lane, he dies in Canada12/2/1929 in Gregg Manitoba, and there is a whole lot of his descendants living there!Last child is Ursula, born 1880. Family history has it, that William Ursula and kids go to Antigua, and that William is now a civil engineer whose initials appear on a breakwater somewhereout there!!!???
Kidsare supposed to have been shipwrecked on way back to UK, with only Joseph Dodds Wake making it back to UK, the rest end up in Canada!
Never found out what happened to William or Ursula ( Mum).Anyway, Joseph marries Barbara Johnson dob 1874 Jarrow 4/9/1901, at St. Pauls Jarrow.

Had so much help with Ursula Dodds, I thought I'd ask for information about her mother-in-law, Jane Haining, who married her father-in -law John Wake in June 1843. She was born in about 1816, I think near Alnwick,John was born in Welbury North Yorkshire, in 1808.
She was his second of three wives......first Ellen ? no maiden name or info, third a widow called Mary Stobbs.
Jane and John had two children, William, and Elizabeth, and disappeared ( died ?) before the 1851 Census.
John and Ellen? had a daughter Anne born Sept 1835 in Welbury.
In1841 Census John and Anne are in Jarrow with his cousin Ann Norman.
