Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Birth/Baptism Lookup for Mary Winder
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 07:58 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

Could someone help with a lookup?

A Mary Winder(s) married Thomas Lucas Sept 20, 1802 in Leeds, Yorkshire. The witnesses were John ?Dickson (?sp) and Thomas Atkinson.

Thomas Atkinson was also the name of a vicar in Reighton, and he died in Langtoft in 1809, according to information on the Internet.

The connection for me is that Mary Winder (my GGGM) married Richard Derrom (Derram) in York (Toronto), Canada 10 Nov 1813. She had previously been widowed, probably in the same year and her previous married name had been "Lucas". Both men were sergeants in the 8th regiment of Foot. I am therefore trying to find the birth certificate or baptism of Mary Winder(s).

I was wondering if the witness, Thomas Atkinson was the same Thomas Atkinson as the vicar of Reighton, and if so, perhaps he was there as a friend of Mary Winder(s). If so, then perhaps she was born and/or grew up in Reighton.

I was therefore hoping that someone could look up the births there. Our records say that she was born on December 10, 1782.

Many thanks,

Marc

Dear all,

Can someone help with a birth/baptism lookup?

Our records indicate that my GGGM, Mary Winder was born Dec 10,1782 in "Lanchichor" Leeds Yorkshire. There is no record of her in Leeds, so I was wondering if someone mistook Lancashire for "Lanchichor", and that she subsequently married her first husband (Thomas Lucas) in Leeds.

Our Mary Winder married my GGGF (Richard Derrom [Derram] from Chorley, Lancashire) in 1813 in York(Toronto), Canada following the death of her first husband during the War of 1812. Both men were sergeants in the 8th Regiment of Foot.

I found via the Internet that a Mary Winder was born to an Ann Winder (illegitimate) on Dec 1, 1782 in Goosnargh, Lancashire. I was hoping that someone could check this record and confirm that it was indeed Dec 1 rather than Dec 10.

It would also be  very informative if there was any evidence that this was not our Mary Winder (such as a record that she were still in Lancashire in Dec 1813 (rather than in Canada).

Thanks for any help you might offer.

Best wishes,

Marc

Dear Jeannie,

The 1851 Census Lucas's would have been too young to be married in 1802. I looked at the 1841 Census and there doesn't seem to be any Lucas's there that would have been the ones married in Leeds in 1802 either, which means that the 1802 marriage may still be the Mary Winder that was widowed in 1813 in Ontario and then married Richard Derrom (spelt Derram on marriage banns).

It would be great if we can find the birth of the Mary Winder(s) who married in Leeds 1802.

The marriage in York, Ontario on 10 Nov 1813 said that Mary Lucas had been widowed by the death of another sergeant in the 8th Regiment of Foot (Richard Derrom was also a sergeant in the 8th). Therefore, we only know that his name was Lucas. We do not know what his first name was, unless we can show that the 1802 marriage in Leeds was theirs.

Unfortunately,I haven't as yet found any War of 1812 deaths of soldiers from the 8th Regiment.

The search continues!

Best wishes,

Marc

Dear all,

Thanks for looking into all of this. It is quite an adventure!

If we can find out if the Thomas and Mary Lucas on the 1841 census are the same ones married in 1802 then that would eliminate them as my Mary (Winder) Lucas, as she would have already been remarried to Richard Derrom of the 8th Regiment of Foot in York (Toronto) Canada in 1813.

If we can find a birth certificate, then that would help to match the age on the census. My Mary Winder was supposedly born on Dec 10 1782 in Leeds, Yorkshire, according to her death certificate in Auckland, NZ.

Best wishes,

Marc

Hi.

Is there a birth record for Mary Winder Born 10 Dec 1782 Leeds, Yorkshire, England?

There is a Mary Winder born to an Ann Winder (illegitimate) on 1 Dec 1782 in Goosnargh Lancashire, but her burial info (in Auckland NZ) said that she was born in "Lanchichor" Leeds Yorkshire. I have no idea what "Lanchichor" is, unless it was mistaken for Lancashire and the people in NZ were mistaken.

Best wishes,

Marc
