Durham / FURNESS, Darlington/Durham/area

Hi

Looking to trace the FURNESS clan - mainly seem to around the Darlington/Durham areas although we believe moved from Crosby Ravensworth.

Our current brick wall, is as follows

John FURNESS c 1732 married Ann Shutt 1761 at St Cuthberts Darlington (we have all their children)
on the Joiners marriage index, John is listed as being from Aycliffe - but so far we CANNOT find his birth/baptism.  On the IGI pilot search the only John Furness in 1732 in that sort of area was born in Gateshead - is this the same one? can anyone find our John?  we are trying to get back from John and believe his father was also John (england naming pattern) which ties in with the Gateshead one (if it helps the Gateshead record on IGI pilot is spelt Furnice)

please help

Durham Lookup Requests / FURNESS - Aycliffe/Gateshead?
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 09:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have hit a brick wall in the research and really hope someone can help out

John FURNES born c1732 married Ann Shutt in 1761 at St Cuthberts Darlington.  His marriage info suggests he was born (or came from?) Aycliffe, so far I cannot varify this, trying to find his parents &/or his siblings and really really stuck

I have tried the pilot search on IGI and the ONLY John Furness (Furnice) in the durham area for the year came up as born in Gateshead??

please help - tearing hair out here!
ta x

we have some 1901 stuff lol

currently after Thomas born 1829 and Charles born 1837 to fill in the William and Ann Group - i have this group on the 1841, 1851 and on 1861 some are still living together, after that i lose them and cant find who they married either which is a problem but i will sort it before i move on to the next group lol

Hi Clare

Thanks for that :)

I've found that useful for cenus information 1841 onwards, however if looking up a marriage and all i know from the "record" is that it was "Sunderland" without requesting the marriage cert (and that gets expensive with the repeating christian names let alone the surname lol) it gets difficult hehehe

Hi Andrea

Can we link to trees? we have a tree so far and although it does include "living" it doesnt give dates of births etc just names?

failing that we go from John Furness and Ann Shutt (married in 1761) and are following that currently.  presently I am "gap filling" so am trying to follow the sons of William Furness and Ann Sidgwick (Sedgewick) married 1822 - am doing Thomas born 1829 and Charles born 1837 - done the other boys as far as possible so far lol

William Furness was the son of Francis Furness and Margaret Woodmass married 1796

Cheers Bob

the problem comes when you have somewhere as large (now) as "sunderland" as there are quite a few lol

still hopefully that information will help :)
