World War Two / Re: Identify cap badge - uniform
« on: Wednesday 16 January 13 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the information, in one way it confirms some information that was a bit sketchy.  I had heard a family member mention that they thought he was an engineer and was in Gibraltar, carving out the rock!!!!!  Not sure about the rock story.  I'm going to try and send for his service records.

Thanks again
Bev

World War Two / Identify cap badge - uniform
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Can anyone recognise my Grandad's cap badge?  Donald Fredrick Farrow fought in WW2 and we think he was an engineer, he survived the war only to die in an accident at a local colliery.  I would like to find out more about his army career, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Derek

John Hawkins died of Bronchitus, he was a coal miner.  Do you think its a possibility that he was cremated? I didn't really consider that.

I have thought of cremation as being pretty modern but I suppose if someone died of a contagious disease, cremation would get rid of the germs.

Would the parish records of St Mary's be at Matlock?

Thanks
Bev

I've looked on Findmypast and found a record of his burial. This is what I found:

Place of Event:Chesterfield
Reg Office:Chesterfield
County:Derbyshire
Register Entry:CHD/69/432

I'm not sure what this tells me, can you shed any light on it for me?

Thanks
Bev

Hi Derek

Thanks for that.

I did think about St Mary's but thought that I might be being too optimistic and the Spital Cemetery jumped out of the map at me.

I haven't tried the NBI, can I get that online or would I need to go to Matlock to see that? This is the first time I have tried to find where someone is buried.

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for the pointers.  I have tried the family history surname search and nothing shouts out at me but thanks for the link, I can use it for my other ancestors.

I think I will try ringing the cemteries department on Monday and see what I can find out.  I didn't think about him being at St Marys but it would be a possibility as his daughter, my Great Grandma was married there.

We've just arrived home from a weekend near Chesterfield but we found it a bit wet to visit the Spital Cemetery.

Thanks
Bev

Hi Derek

I wondered if your records would show where someone was buried?  My Great Great Grandfather, John Hawkins died at 23 Lordsmill Street, Chesterfield on 23rd March 1889.

Thanks for your help
