London and Middlesex / line of Ashbys in Hackney london
« on: Tuesday 11 June 13 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace a line of Ashbys in the old borough of Hackney London the earliest known one is an Alice Ashby who died in 1802.  I know there are quite a few later ones but i need to trace back Alice Ashby as she seems the very earliest Ashby i can trace.  Can anyone help, there were some children born to my ancestor Charles Ashby and his wife Anne Wells but they did not survive, they were:

Sophia Ashby
Sophia ann Ashby
Francis Jukes Ashby

only Edward Ashby born around 1782 survived

i need to trace this Ashby line as far back as i can but have reached a brick wall with Alice Ashby who died in 1802 burial record with St Johns church Hackney. :-\

Hello there James,

thanks so much for the amazing photograph, i will print off a copy if thats ok with you.

I am slowly unravelling the robinson/bowles strands.......annie g robinson was my great grandmother, she died in 1859 after the birth of Charles W.G. Robinson Wallis, Barnes's father and my great grandfather. I have traced the Bowles line right back to the time of Cromwells arrival in ireland and they seem to have lived in Youghal and Glenaboy where that is in Eire i dont know, Henry Bowles was a JP, of the Robinsons I dont know quite as much except what you have kindly filled in, do they originate in Eire or from elsewhere although Robinson seems to be an irish surname.

Hello James,

thanks for replying to my post, that sounds interesting.

Im sure that Barnes Slyfield Robinson is who Sir Barnes Wallis was partly named for.  Sir Barnes Wallis was my fathers uncle.  I have traced some of the the Wallis tree and the Robinson tree but i cannot find the birthplace or country of origin of Joseph Robinson snr Barnes Slyfields Robinsons father except a 1795 birthdate and marriage to anne georgina robinson in co aherlow ireland.  Joseph Robinsons children or some of them were born in Berbice Guyana.

Hello Heywood, thanks very much yes this is my family.  I cant trace Reverend Mcghee back to ireland as i dont much about his birthdate, birthplace.  I cant trace Thomas Augustus any further back and id like to trace where he was born and his parentage he died in 1846 so he had quite a long navy career.  many thanks.

Dublin / irish marriage
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
can anyone help me find a Dublin marriage for a THOMAS AUGUSTUS WALLIS to Eleanor Margaret Winstanley in 1811/12 and any children of this marriage.  Thomas Augustus Wallis was a ships purser in the royal navy and i think at one time maybe around 1805 his ship the Majestic was anchored off bere island on the irish coast.  I want to trace his marriage and subsequent children.

I know his date of birth was 1778 dont know birthplace and his wife to be Eleanor Margaret Winstanley was born in 1785 maybe in Ireland.  Many thanks to all. ???

thanks so much everyone who helped me on this its solved a family mystery as to where great grandfather fred knight was born and also great grandmother elizabeth knight nee arnold. Her first husband fred knight died young about early fifties i was told in leicesterof a heart attack, their marriage was never a happy one and they both seperated before my grandad william edward was very old.  thats why fred is shown as single on the census of 1901.i can quite understand how they were travelling up and down the country so much but ive been told they were gypsies of some sort.  once again thanks everyone. anstey was a substantial red herring as starting point for my research but the Arnold family and the knights seem to have had family members in cambridgeshire and leicester.

Thanks so much Danone ...ive heard Anstey is a small village or was my line of Knights seem to have come from there, my father also had an uncle Arnold Knight who run an off licence in Cosby in Leicester.  The Knights seem to have been deocrators, and fairground painters maybe of gypsy origin.  Maybe there is a local church in Anstey where their records could be found.
