Yes, how the crockery got to be where it is now is going to remain a mystery I think. I am aware of the names on the war memorial and over the years have obtained copies of the photos held in the library and elsewhere on the internet, but thanks for your suggestion regarding those. I also obtained copies of WLDS photos from the 'Blitz Kids' book written by David DeBurgh who also went to the school and which I would strongly recommend if you have not already read it.

My paternal Grandfather from Fulham died in 1912 at the age of 35 leaving about 9 children whose ages ranged from 1 to 13. I think it was because of this that my Grandmother had no choice but to put several of the children into ‘care’. At the age of 7, at least two of them, my dad and his twin brother were put into the West London District School and stayed there for 8 years (Sept 1914 till Sept 1922). From the entry records held at LMA they were there for ‘a holiday’. Clearly it was a pretty long holiday. Sadly apart from a Prayer/Hymn book that was presented to him when he left the school I have no mementoes of my dad’s stay there. It was therefore exciting for me to read about the find of these pieces of crockery. Although not born there, I now live in Ashford, about a mile or so from the former site of the school, so today, armed with a small fork and my wellies I was able to go there and retrieve a small number of these pieces of crockery. It is clear from the pieces I unearthed that they included jugs, mugs and plates, all marked with the school ‘emblem’. So, thanks to Jayne’s vigilance I now have some further items relating to my dad’s history. Thank You.

Hi fredrickay,

My dad was also in this home and i did my research a couple of years ago. The records I found were at the London Archives 40 Northampton Road Clerkenwell. (Nearest underground Farringdon). They had information on microfilm rolls and also had some of the original ledgers there (punishment book, sickness book etc - about 5 in total I believe). If I remember I doesn't cost anything but you have to sort of register when you get there. Take yourself some food and drink if you intend staying a while as although they have an 'eating area' there is not much available other than drink machines (was when I went). Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks Gortonboy,

I have a copy of the marriage certificate and the spouses name was definitely John Joseph Burke.

As you say, in the 1911 census they claimed to have been married for 7 years and had 4 children, the eldest being 6. It appears however that they actually tied the knot in 1910.

Still cannot get any handle on 'army' connection.

Many thanks Elwy and Shane

Yes, that is the correct marriage date. I got it wrong in my posting, partly because in their 1911 census they claimed to have been married 7 years, possibly because they had several children by then (naughty). I have a copy of the marriage cert and father is shown as John Burke - deceased - occupation farmer.

Therefore the info Elwyn has come up with is very promising. The DOB of JJB is about right, he was I believe still in Ireland at that time and father shown as labourer is not a million miles from farmer.

Lets hope smeone can shed light on the military angle in England.

Thanks - John

I am researching one of my grandfathers, John Joseph Burke, but am not making too much headway. The loose facts I have so far are as follows:
Born c1873 Clonmel Co Tipperary Ireland.
Married Ada Maria Britton c1906. Came to England around same time.
Had seven children: Kathleen, Eileen,Marjorie, Gladys, Rose,Winifred, Albert.
Possibly a member of the territorial army, 20th County of London Regiment.
Worked as a 'catering establishment doorman' (Commissionaire)
Died 1927 Fulham London.

I am particularly interested in his parentage, his army and civilian careers.

Any help at all would be much appreciated.
