I guess we just have to wait and hope Ancestry will introduce a Chromosome Browser eventually, although I take your point about knowing how much DNA shared matches have in common.

Please can I just check something about Pro Tools. I assume this is not the same as a chromosome browser which GedMatch and My Heritage have - is that right?
I have matches on Ancestry where I know the common ancestor but don't know which segments of which chromosomes we share, including one fairly close match, and then I have equally close matches on My Heritage and GedMatch where I know the which segments we share but can't work out which family they belong to. Unless Ancestry are offering a Chromosome Browser which will enable me to match segments to family and then use DNA Painter to work out who the common ancestor might be, I don't think Pro Tools will help me. Or will they?
Hope that makes sense...

Yes, thank you. I had come to the same conclusion about the Saxmundham John. If he is my John, he comes from Devon/Somerset not Suffolk.

Thank you very much indeed - that is helpful. I will need to do some more work, especially in the passenger lists, which I didn’t realise were available at family search.

I think the James aged 15 on the 1841 census in Chard is probably from a related but different Burrows family - he is a male servant rather than a son, although I take the point about no relationships on the 1841. I am finding lots of Burrows children seemed to be living with other family members in 1841 and subsequent censuses for various reasons.

That applies to John b1828 - I think, if I have the right person, he is with his aunt (?) Lydia Dimond in 1841 and then missing from the 1851. If he wasn’t with James and Sarah on the voyage, I think it is possible that he is from a different family.

That might match Harriet who was part of James and Sarah’s family in Chard in 1841. She was said to be 14 in 1841 and was baptised there in October 1827 to James and Sarah.

My interest in John b1828 who married Adeline Searls is that I have DNA matches to his descendants and the only way I can make sense of them is if he is the son of a John and Caroline Burrows. John senior could be a brother of the James b1791 who went to the States, which is what I’m hoping to find out. Online trees suggest John junior is the son of James and Sarah but, if he is, I’m really stuck.

Thank you, that ties in with what I thought as far as James is concerned.

Is there any immigration record for the family that might indicate whether John was James’ son or nephew, for example, please?

I wonder whether someone could give me some information about the BURROWS family who emigrated from England to Colesville, Broome, NY some time between 1841 and 1850, please.

There is a family consisting of James 59, Sarah 60, Mary Ann 24 and Sarah 16 in 1850 who I think were in Chard, Somerset in 1841.

There is also John (possibly John H) who is 21 and living with his future in-laws, the Searls in 1850.

What I'd like to know is whether they are the same family or not - did they arrive on the same ship? Is there any indication as to the relationship between them?

Hi,

I think the death in Tideswell is almost certainly a different Tom Jackson. In the censuses up to and including 1911 there is a Tom Jackson born and living in Stony Middleton, Bakewell who is a Boot and Shoe Clicker, as well as your grandfather who was born in Newcastle under Lyme and who is living there in 1901. My guess is that it's the Stony Middleton one who died in 1917 in Tideswell.
