Donald William McTavish (named after his two grandfathers) was born in Liverpool (Toxteth) abt. 1889 to John McTavish (Police constable) and Catherine Goldsmith. John McTavish was born in Skipness to Donald McTavish (shepherd) and Catherine McArthur. Looking at earlier posts you will have the info already about this family from the census. They also went by the surname of Thomson for a number of years before reverting back to McTavish. Donald McTavish died on 20/4/1893 in Skipness and his wife Catherine on 24/2/1904. This family are from Skipness , Scotland but spent a few years at Saddell, before coming back to Skipness Village. These are the members of John McTavish's family :-
Catherine McTavish born 1851 married William Paterson (joiner) in Glasgow
John McTavish born 1853 married Catherine Goldsmith in Liverpool
Marion McTavish born 1856 married Norman McGillivray (mason) in Glasgow
Mary McTavish born 1858 married David Russell (coachman) in Glasgow
Annie McTavish born 1860 died aged 21 in childbirth,unmarried. Son James also died 11 days later.
Flora McTavish born 1861 died unmarried in 1942 (worked as a laundry maid at Skipness House)
Hector McTavish born 1865 (mentally disabled)
Catherine, Marion and Mary went to Glasgow to work in service.
John McTavish died in Liverpool on 13/12/1917. Before he retired he was a fireman in the picturehouse. Always thought this was strange place for a fireman but I have been told that in the early days there was always a fireman at picturehouses as the spools of film were very flammable. Catherine McTavish (Goldsmith) died 7/4/1935. I have a photo of John McTavish and Catherine Goldsmith with my grandmother Catherine and her sister Marion as children. Have you got a copy of this? Also have a few photos of Donald William McTavish in the 1st world war. My Dad who was his nephew looked very like him.
Catherine Goldsmith was born 3/5/1857 in Ramsey to William Goldsmith (born 1811 in Kirkbride), and Jane Teare born 1817 in Andreas. William Goldsmith was a farmer - his parents were Evan Goldsmith and Mary Joughin. Jane Teare's parents were Thomas Teare and Elizabeth Teare (born Ballaugh). Jane Teare's parents farmed East Ballabane in Andreas. Jane had quite a famous uncle (Charles Teare) the "Fairy Doctor"who was well known on the Isle of Man as a healer. Jane died aged 54 years on 7/2/1871. Think I found William Goldsmith born 1844 (Catherine's brother) living in Liverpool on one of the census's and wondered if this was why she came to Liverpool to work herself.
Hope I haven't confused you with all this as a lot of the Christian names are the same. They named their children after family members those days.
