Ireland / Immigration from Ireland to Scotland 1840-50s
« on: Sunday 15 August 10 02:24 BST (UK)  »
As I search the census records for my family history I keep dead-ending with Ireland as the place of birt. I also notice that at least half the folks on the census pages in the 1850's and 60's have come from Ireland to work the coalfields of Lanark.

Is there a way to search ship or immigration records to perhaps extend the search back in to Ireland?

Lanarkshire / smellie family - robert and Janet
« on: Sunday 15 August 10 02:12 BST (UK)  »
I have found a wedding record for Robert Smellie and Janet Thomson for Shotts/ Lanark  on December 7, 1798. Have similarly found a birth record for a Thomas Smellie born to the above in 1905. Trouble is I cannot verify if this is the Thomas Smellie who was married to Ann Lynch b. 1806. Cannot find a death certificate for Thomas to verify the parentage. Any one out there have  this linking information on Thomas. I have Anne and him in the 1841 census and then he disappears. His son Peter Smellie b. 1848 d. 1901 Craigneuk, Lanark M. Margaret Nicol b 1851 d. 1900 Motherwell .
Appreciate the help - there seems to be a lot of information out there on the aforementionned Robert so this would be a godsend...

Thanks Lodger. I did use every single one of your references in my family tree from back in April. The Isabella Little and William Nicol I am referrring to go back even farther...but if you have given me all that there is in Cambusnethan thank you so much for all your help. We have travelled back to Wishaw from Canada a number of times and been to the graveyard several times - yes even behind the wires and barricades and once in the dead of night- but you have given us way more information through this rootschat site.   So here isa bit more info on my dead ends - and if there is nothing else there I will try some other sources. Thanks a million times over!

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: MANN and LOUGHRIE birthplaces
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Our Lawrie ancestors came sometime between 1846 adn the 1860s from Ireland back to the Lanarkshire coalmines.  With a long tradition of them being Scots we were surprised to see them listed as from Ireland on the 1871 census... Can you see any connections with your Lawries.

BTW I also found out that a Robert Laurie and his family were granted land to build up the area around Pomeroy during the Ulster Plantations.... no link for me yet...

William LAWRIE was b. Ireland d. 1891 Scotland, son of Joseph LAURIE and Sarah MONTGOMERY/ IE imm. Scotland m. Elizabeth Porter
Elizabeth  PORTER b. Ireland 1820 d. 1864 Cambusnethan.

I would appreciate advice on how I might establish from which community in Derry/Londonderry my ancestors originated.

According to the Scottish 1851 Wigtownshire census,  Agnes, Elizabeth, George, Sarah, Martha, Mary and William MANN were born in Ireland between about 1834 and 1849 to James Mann and Janet LOUGHRIE.  Agnes Mann specified Co Derry/Londonderry in 1871-1901 Wigtownshire censuses as her birthplace so I am hoping that the rest of the family came from the same place.

Mother Janet was apparently born in Portpatrick, Wigtownshire, but her father Henry Loughrie was Irish, born abt 1771 (from 1851 Census).

The Loughrie name has been spelled LOCHARY, LOUCHIE, LAWRIE in later documents which has slowed tracing the family somewhat!

Regards, Michael.

Do you have the death registrations for James LITTLE, Coalminer and Helen THOMSON.
They were originally from Sanquhar in Dumfries but may have moved to Cambusnethan  for the coal mining. Also their daughter

Isabella LITTLE and spouse William NICOL

Dumfriesshire / Re: JANE THOMPSON - birth
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 18:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Indeed spelling more likely to be Thomson. A lot of Thomsons (including my ancestors) around Dumfries.

A difficult family to research....

I am also having difficulty researching the Thomson line from Saqnquhar. Specificall looking for leads on
James LITTLE b. circa 1762  d. 27 August 1833, aged 71 m. Helen THOMSON

Helen THOMSON b. circa 1788 d. 20 July 1864, aged 76

The Little family resided at Wanlockhead where they were associated with the
lead mines. However the death certificate for their daughter Isabella LITTLE (NICOL) indicates that her father James was a coalminer. This slight change in occupation might have been reflected in his move to the Cambusnethan area where coal was a chief resource.  I
Could not find a record of marriage for these or birth for their son in the old parish records.

Known children of James LITTLE and Helen THOMSON:

1.    Isabella LITTLE *   Direct Ancestor b. circa 1800
2   Thomas LITTLE   b. circa 1806 d.23 March 1877 aged 71. m.Janet FERGUSON 6 December, 1835. Janet FERGUSSON b. circa 1813 d. 7 July 1893, aged 80 years. They had eleven children in their Wanlockhead family. Of these, two sons, James LITTLE and ? LITTLE came out to New Zealand on the WAVE QUEEN landing in Dunedin (Otago) 22 July 1863. Like so many of their time they worked the Gold fields.James LITTLE married Grace Henderson MURRAY on 27 March 1870 and she gave birth to William LITTLE on 13 August 1882. There were six children altogether born to James LITTLE and Grace MURRAY in New Zealand.
Some websites indicate a brother David LITTLE as well but that family headed to Canada and
