Roscommon / Re: Sloan and McLean of Boyle, Co. Roscommon
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Greetings from Australia
I think I can help - as I have a copy of a Family tree ghoing back to about 1750 when

A McLean  possibly Scotch , of Drumsua, Clune, Newry.& Carrivck in Leitrimalso suggestedborn about 1750
Children
Samuel
Robert,
John
William
George Hix

As we are both descended from William I will just continue with that line
William of County Leitrim -farmer and linen weaver  married Jane McLeam
     Isabella married Michael Bingham
     Mary Ann married Jones
Margaret married Hewston of Leitrim (could it be Houston?)
     Michael married twice
Samuel married Susanna Houston 9these are recorded in the Ardcarne Parish register)

Samuel and Susan had the following
          William b 1840
           Thomas b 1841
           Mary Ann b 1843 married W J Sloan
Eliza Jane b 1845 married Mair
           Joseph George b 1847
           Samuel b 5 August  1848 9my g-grandfather)
           Sarah b 1850? m Parker
The 4 sons all cemigrated to Victoria and I can supply more info if you want

Today you solved a lifelong mystery for me
My grandfather Dr John Samuel McLean became a doctor because his cousin had died in India whilst working as a doctor there.  I knew the story but had no name for the cousin.  Thank you so much.
My only regret is that my mother Doreen Bird nee McLean died on the 24 august just 3 days after celebrating hjer 100th birthday  She would have been interested to knnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnow all this.
Good luck

Thank you very much for that information.  It seems Eliza  may have committed bigamy as she had married 14 month's earlier in Wigston Magna - which would also explain being married by licence rather than by banns! and in another county

Hi everybody especially Mike who looked up info for me before.  Today I found a marriage for John Bird and Eliza Goodrich at Northampton on 13 August 1833.  This is on the Family Search site and has only recently appeared.  No church is named which surprised me a bit.  I'd be grateful if someone could check this for me.  Eliza seems to have abandoned her married name of Cobley and I wonder what happened to Thomas!  More importantly possibly was the fact that Eliza was bequeathed 250 pounds in her grandfather's will (Thomas Whiteman died 1829)  Did Thomas take the money and run?   John Bird was a schoolmaster in Anstey in 1834  (parish register)How can I obtain a copy of this parish record - I'd like to know the details on the record and who were witnesses.
Thsnk you everybody for your help and encouragement

Hi Janie
Thanks for the info you posted on the Bargrove family  I purchased the wills of my William 1772-1840 and Thomas who I think was William's grandfather -but I am not sure about William's parents.  Can you help me.  Isn't it marvellous the more we find out the more we want to know!
Also I tried looking for Margaret Bargrove's half siblings - ie George Burts children but they seem to disappear after the 1861 census.
Thanks for your help   I'd like to knw exactly who William's parents were!

Hi
If Shepherds Paddock is in South Australia there probably wont be any other information in the original records.  If that is the case try the SA marriage records on cd  as they have tried to provide further info there.  Otherwise i'm afraid I haven't any suggestions Best of luck !

Just a thought - there's 7 years 1831 -1838 -could he have served time as a convict?  I note he states clearly that he is free in his first application for land!

Thank you very much for your rapid responses - The main story I know about Margaret is that she brought her piano to Australia which seems to indicate a reasonable amount of finance in the family.  Left alone when her Dr husband road off into the bush to tend his patients she would play her piano   One dat\y she heard a sound and discovered an armed hunting party of aborigines outside  She kept  playing and the men moved on to her great relief,  At the time they lived at Eagle Point an isolated settlement near Bairnsdale Later they moved to Rosedale a more central location for the doctor.  There were also romours oof money in Chancery !
I will study all I've now accumulated and see what else I can glean from this.
