Derbyshire / Re: Placename: Bailey in Derbyshire

Hi,
There is a 'Bailey Brook' that runs through Langley Mill in East Derbyshire. Sometimes the names of brooks are related to place names.

Thanks for all the info. It is all fresh and I will certainly pursue it further. Henry must be somewhere in 1841 and must have had parents. many thanks.

Derbyshire / Henry Hole b.1818 Tansley Matlock
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 10:18 GMT (UK)  »
Henry Hole, b.1818 'Tansley,Matlock'. There are 2 Henry Holes born in 1818 in the same area. One is the son of George and Ann Hole and became a shoemaker, living and working all his life around Ashover. I am sure they are related, but the Henry I'm researching moved to the Langley Mill/Eastwood area where he worked as a miner. He was married to Hannah, (Holmes). Anyone know the name of my Henry's parents please. I can't find him anywhere on the 1841 census

Derbyshire / Re: Alvaston Hall Derby
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Sue,
Alvaston hall was built by the Allestrey, (Allestree) family. The earliest Allestrey was a serf on the lands belonging to Darley Abbey, 12th century I seem to remember. He was given his freedom and some land by the Abbot. The land was in the Mackworth area. Over the centuries, they became a very successful family and very wealthy, becoming right hand men to Charles 1st. They built Alvaston Hall in the Old Hall Road area. They were dispossessed after the civil war and those still in Derby became small or tenant farmers in the Smalley/Morley area. There is a memorial to some of them in the Cathedral. Local historian Maxwell Craven has done a huge amount of research on the family and the library holds copies. In one of the books is a photo of the hall, taken in 1937, not long before the house was demolished
I am related to them through my maternal great x 3 grandfather, who ended his days in Derby workhouse. Back to the start again. Hopes this helps.

Cambridgeshire / Coulson families of Cambridgeshire
« on: Tuesday 08 December 09 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
The 2 largest  concentrations of Coulson families in England are in East Anglia and Northumberland.  I can trace my family in Cambridgeshire back to 1550.  The largest concentration is in the North East with a big geographic gap between the 2 areas.  Did one family move from one of the areas to the other to start a new life?  Has anybody any theories or facts about this? Thanks, Judy F

Northumberland / Coulson families of the North East
« on: Tuesday 08 December 09 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
The 2 most dense areas of Coulson families in England are Northumberland and East Anglia, with far more families in the North East.  My Coulson family comes from Cambridgeshire and I can follow the family name back to 1550 still within Cambridgeshire.  The density of the 2 areas is so definite, with a large geographic gap in between, it looks as though one part of the family moved from one area to the other.  A big question, but does anyone know which way the drift moved?  Any theories would be appreciated.  Judy F

Hi SC
I'm sorry, I'm new to RootsChat, so I don't know what PM is.  I have a photograph of Sarah and some other bits and pieces, but I can't seem to attach them for you. I blame my age.
We are certainly talking about the same relatives.  My g. grandparents were John and Sarah and my Dad was named Harry after your Harry!
Let me know how to send bits to you and I'll do so with pleasure

Hi everyone.
You have no idea how pleased I am to come across your conversation.  Henry was my g x2 granddad.  His son John was my great granddad and his daughter Eliza was my gran. I believe that before leaving the Tansley area, Henry worked in the cotton mill there.
I have been searching for Henry's parents for months and months; 1, for my own family records and 2, (You'll like this!) because a Henry Hole was involved in the Pentrich uprising of 1817.  The whole saga can be found on the Pentrich Revolution website.  It is a very important piece of English History.  Henry gave evidence against the revolution leaders which led to executions, imprisonment and transportation.
I see the Woodward crest at the side of some messages. One of my great aunts from the Hole family that I knew well was Amy Woodward, my Gran's sister.  Her children were Dorcas, Amy and Ken.She lived at Hill Top and was lovely.  Is it the same connection?
Many thanks for your information
Judy
