Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Laundress - Own account

Many thanks.

In the days of many layers of clothing and before the days of labour-saving devices, it must have been very hard work.

Thanks to everybody for their input.

Stan - in 1901 Isabella's surname was Parslow!

Census and Resource Discussion / Laundress - Own account
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 10:55 BST (UK)  »
In census entries for my grandmother's adoptive mother, from the mid 1800s to 1901, her stated occupation moves from 'laundress' to 'laundress - own account' ; this is in Portsmouth.

It may be an obvious question but does that imply that she had set up her own business - either at home or at separate premises - or does it refer to a rather differnt arrangement?

As a side issue, Isabella was a resourceful, colourful, lady, from an Irish family, who apart from 'adopting' my grandmother, was married five times, four of her spouses being Royal Marines. Making research complicated!

Many thanks.

World War Two / Gurkha service
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 12:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a friend whose late father, served (presumably as a British officer) with the Gurkhas either during or shortly after WW2.

Does anybody know whether these service records are available online or elsewhere and to non-relatives - I would like to present her with a copy if possible.

Many thanks.

Thank you Nell

Elizabeth is recorded as being 54 years old and cause of death a form of cancer.

A Google search for The Union House resulted in only one entry.

Do you know whether the building has survived?

I have a copy of the death certificate for Elizabeth Hammond whose death in October 1898 was 'informed' by The Hospital Matron of The Union House, Milton.

Widow of Walter Hammond, Seaman  RN - and possibly a relative - was The Union House a hospital or the workhouse, or both?

If the workhouse, I am surprised as I had naively assumed a naval seaman's widow might have been better provided for.

Many thanks for the information.

I have passed by the building a number of times over the years without realising its significance to my relatives.

What surprises me is that an RMA family was resident at one time and I would not have thought they came within the 'poorly paid' criterion for residency but that may be an incorrect impression.

Many thanks Suzanne.

I had searched but neither of these sites showed.
