I’m a distant cousin of Sharon Spry, who died in 2015.  I just saw your message at RootsChat.  My tree shows Robert Smith Clazy (1908-1944) and Helen Mary Margaret Wilson (1910-2001).  I think they might be your grandparents?

My great-great-great-grandfather was shown at birth as George Clezie, born in 1787 at Hutton, Berwickshire, southern Scotland.  He migrated to Canada, way back in 1832.  Clezie was one of the spellings used then, along with Clazy - Clazie - Clazey - Clezy.

I would very much enjoy getting in touch to exchange more information about the family.  But if we put email addresses here they might get deleted.  I’ll try anyway and see what happens.

Clearly there was more than one Elizabeth Brown.  The one that I'm dealing with was shown with husband John Brown in the 1881 census at Berwick-upon-Tweed, with their children Isabella, Jane, Thomas, William, Elizabeth.  It says the wife/mother Elizabeth was born in Berwickshire but doesn't give an exact location. 

Which leaves the original question: where is "Boyude, Berwick"?  That was shown in the 1871 census at Swinton as Elizabeth's birthplace.  Unless "Boyude" was a misreading of what you say was  "Straud".  Then where is "Straud, Berwick"?

Maybe there was more than one Elizabeth Brown?  I found her in 1851 census at Muirhouse, Whitsome, living with her mother, Isabella Purvis, wife of William Clazie (1790-1863).  That census  does say she was born at Mordington.  But ten years earlier, 1841 census at Hutton said she was born in England.  There were 10 children in the family, so maybe her parents just didn't remember where Elizabeth was born. 

FamilySearch doesn't seem to have an actual census image.  I'm on a shared computer, don't have access to paid sites. 

Is "Boyude" in Berwickshire, or at Berwick-upon-Tweed?  Could be either.




 

One more attempt... still looking for some record of Ellen Lockhart born about 1816 at Paisely.

I'm told that church records from Paisley have disappeared.  One story says they were lost in a fire... another says they were kept in a basement and were destroyed by mildew.  Does anyone know the  facts?

WHEN were the records destroyed?  Is there an approximate date?

WHERE did the destruction occur?  At one of the churches?

HOW did it happen: fire or mildew or what?

DID any records survive?  If so, where are they now kept?


Ellen Lockhart was apparently born at Paisley about 1816, give-or-take a year.  Parents were William Lockhart & Margaret Henderson, married in 1811 at Paisley High Church.

The last-known record of this family at Paisley was baptism of a daughter Janet, 13 June 1824 at High Church.

Then William Lockhart reappeared, in Canada, with his family, in the census in June 1831 at St. Philippe, south of Montreal.

Between 1824-31... a blank.  Any help greatly appreciated.
