No, I don't have any information as to Edmund's birthplace, but his siter Catherine was apparently baptised at a place called Fethard, if that might help.

Thanks for all the other gen - you never know when it might play a part !

Regards, Adam

Hi BG,

Interesting that the Going in the line you are investigating has changed to Gowen. We have the opposite suggestion that the name Going evolved from McGowan, to Gowan, to Going, but this is only one theory !

I have annecdotal evidence only that Goings arrived in Ireland with Cromwell, specifically three brothers. Robert of Cranagh (Tipperary) seems to be the instigator of my line of the name, but his brothers (supposedly Caleb and Philip) may have settled elsewhere. I have also seen mention of a Stephen as a brother of Robert, but in his case also in Tipp.

I have one male cousin Going in UK, one of his sisters in Uk the other in USA, but apart from that I don't know of any other direct descendants from the same line back to Joseph Going in Maldon (1795-1874).

If I come accross a positive connection between Cork and Tipp. I will let you know.

Regards, Adam
PS. I'm sure it was only a typo, but the Edmond I found was son of JOHN Going & Ellen HayEs.

Well, Ladies & Gentlemen, what can I say !

Thank you all so much for such a quick flood of information.  Apart from the Henry T Lumley, everything seems to fit with the info I have, with g.g.grandfather Robert having moved about quite a bit (Brighton-Anglesey-London).

Understand the comment about the difficulty of researching in Ireland, as most of my paternal Grandparent's line eminate from there.

Apologies for not having replied sooner to your first reply Pauline, but my computer crashed jut after I posted my original message, and I was away all day yesterday !

Thank you all once again. Adam

London and Middlesex / Charles Lumley , b.1866 in Kensington

Hi All,

I am looking for information on Charles Lumley, my g.grandfather, recorded in family papers as born 1866 (Kensington) married to Maria Elizabeth Matthews, died 1946 (Paddington). I do have a birth cert for a Charles Lumley born in 1865 (close) but in Anglesey, North Wales (not so close !). If the b.cert is my g.grandfather's then his father's name was Robert, a coachman, but I have never heard of a Welsh connection so am very dubious.

Any help would be appreciated. Adam

Hi BG.

Are you still searching ?!

I came accross an Edmund Going, son of a John Going/Ellen Hayes on the GenForum Going research page ("www.genforum.genealogy.com/going"). He had siblings David, Micheal, Judith, and Catherine, the latter apparently baptised in 1835 in Ireland. Did a quick search for James Philip G but nothing came up.

Altough I am now in Somerset, I was brought up in Sussex. My late father Philip Going had a letter from a Florrie Pankhurst in Southampton in 1984 enquiring as to family history, as her "middle son is quite interested". She was the daughter of Thomas Oakley, brother of grandmother Emma Mary Going (ne้ Oakley). Don't know if Florrie or her son would still be around, or how she got on research-wise, or indeed if she was looking at Goings or just Oakley descendants, but you could try looking for Pankhursts in Southampton.

I don't know the connection between my family and James Philip / Edmund, but as I am sure you know there were Goings everywhere in Ireland (especially Tipperary) from the mid 18th century. My immediate line goes back to a Joseph Going in Maldon, Essex (1795-1874), but I (and a member of the Going clan in NZ) are currently try to establish how/when he or his parents arrived from Ireland. There is some contention in NZ as to the Going/Gowan link, and hopefully this too can be resolved soon.

Happy hunting. Adam
