The Common Room / FREE World War 1 records on Ancestry from 10th-13th November
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone :)

I've received an e-mail from Ancestry to let me know that will be giving free access to World War 1 service records, pension records and medal rolls index cards from 10th to 13th November.

I've posted here rather than the Armed Forces board so that as many Rootschatters as possible can benefit. ;D

Happy hunting!

Best wishes,
HubbellGardiner

Hi maisie76

Do you have a copy of your grandfather's divorce records?

I've looked at the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue and there is a reference to his divorce.

Reference CS258/8196
Title John H Nicoll v Annie Wright or Nicoll: Divorce
Dates 1942

You can view this reference at www.nas.gov.uk/catalogues/default.asp

If you get in touch with the archives you can either go along and view the file in person or you can request an estimate for them to send you a copy. This would give you information regarding how long your grandfather and his first wife had been separated before they divorced, the reasons for the divorce and may provide details as to whether there were any children.

Hope this information helps.  :)

Regards,

Hi John

The National Library of Scotland has a collection of Scottish Post Office directories which are available to view for free online.

They are available at www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office

Unfortunately, for Edinburgh, the last directory available online is for 1911-1912. It still might be worth checking the directories for around about that time period to see if you can find any entries relating to the family.

Hope this information helps. :)

Hi again romangirl

I've had a look at The Scotsman archive and as MonicaL says there are a number of articles relating to convictions for Martin Brennan. Some give quite a bit of detail relating to the offences he committed.

You mentioned in your last post that you visited the National Archives so I presume that you live somewhere in Scotland. If you do then you can join the National Library of Scotland online for free. This will then allow you free online access to various newspaper archives including The Scotsman. You can join up at www.nls.uk

As soon as you register you will be able to access a wide variety of material online from the comfort of your own home.  ;D

Hope this information helps.

Hi sage

I've had a look on Scotlands People and there is a death in 1956 in the county of Lanark for an Agnes Steel (no e on the end) with the other surname of Gibb. Have you seen it? If not it might be worth a look.

Hope this information helps. :)

Hi again romangirl

I've had another look at the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue and I've found a second reference to your grandparents' divorce. This reference is dated 1946 and the details are:

Reference CS258/13138
Title Helen Stenhouse or Brennan v Martin Brennan (or Brannan): Divorce
Dates 1946

This is obviously 10 years on from the reference to the interim decree of divorce I found yesterday. I think it may be worth your while to go and view these documents or to get a copy sent to you as they may give give you some information regarding your grandfather's location in the 1930s and the 1940s. This is turn may help you narrow down a location for your grandfather's death.

With regard to him being listed as deceased on his youngest son's marriage certificate, bear in mind that this information was given by his son. It may be true or if his son had not seen or heard from him for some time, he may have, for whatever reason said he was deceased. I have several certificates where my ancestors have given information which has proved to be inaccurate. Sometimes this seemed to be down to a genuine mistaken belief  but sometimes it was clearly a lie on their part. ;D

Hope this information helps. :)

Hi again Mundell

If you are looking for general information about where your grandfather served during WW1 you could try www.1914-1918.net

The site has a great deal of information about WW1 in general and the movements of all the different regiments during WW1. It also details the movements of specific battalions of each regiment.

Happy to be of help. ;D
