United States of America / Re: Doody from County Clare, Ireland in USA
« on: Monday 11 February 13 00:21 GMT (UK)  »
My partner, Margaret, is a grand daughter of Michael Doody, younger brother of Maggie. Michael was the only one of the eight surviving Doodys of that generation to remain in Ireland, where he continued to run the family farm in Clondrinagh. His eldest sister, Mary, and her 3 children and her sister Anne returned from Chicago to County Clare. Mary opened a shop and she and her 3 children (none of whom married) are buried in Clare. When Anne returned, she married and raised a family in Clare.
I’ve been working on the Doody family tree since 2009 and have traced all of the members in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. I know that the other 5 Doodys who went to Chicago – Bridget, Maggie, John, Patrick and Andrew all married people from County Clare (or in Andrew’s case a first generation American whose parents were from Clare).
Margaret’s mother (Mary), who died in 1988 was Michael Doody’s eldest daughter. She moved to the east coast of Ireland, married and raised her family. Mary’s youngest sister (also Margaret) died in Clare last year, but the sister ((*)) is still alive and living in County Clare. Margaret remembers her mother receiving letters from her cousins in America.
I’d like to complete the Doody family tree, including the descendants of Bridget, Maggie, John, Patrick and Andrew. Would you be willing to help me fill in some of the gaps ?

I am looking for anyone with an interest in the ancestry of the Burke family of Curhoor, County Galway. I have a James Burke marrying a Delia Hardiman in Loughrea in 1913 and am looking for anyone with an interest in their ancestors.

Hi Meg,

Did you find out anything more ? If not, I know someone involved in the Roundwood Reservoir who may be able to find out if he worked on it.

Hi,

While the records don't go back far, the RCB hold boxes of documents for parishes and there may be some information in those. Also, there is an active group working on the graveyard and also on gathering information together for their website. I have also been investigating ancestors from Tomdarragh, part of Derralossary. There is also Brian Cantwell's Memorial Inscriptions.

Hi, the original burial book for Calary is still in use. Calary parish was formed in 1832 and there are many Suttons of Glassnamullen listed in the burial book, the earliest being a baby (Elizabeth Victoria) in 1897. However, as Glassnamullen had previously been part of what is now Powerscourt Parish, Suttons continued to be buried at the old graveyard of Stagonil on the Powerscourt estate. Thre is still a family of Suttons farming at Glassnamullen.

Hi Leandra,

I have stuff to send you on Doodys, but Family Search now includes Irish b, m & d records prior to civil registration. This is new. I had a look and couldn't find the birth or marriage details of Andrew & Bridget. However, as they married in Feb 1861 and had first children in Aug 1863, there is a good chance that those were their first. Shipping records of their emigration should confirm.

Speak soon.

Hi Dettori,

Thanks for all your work. The family of John Doody and Bridget Daly is the second one you came across as John wasn't born until 1876. Margaret Kane was the first to go the Chicago and some of the others lodged with her when they arrived (e.g. Andrew). Her husband Martin died and she eventually returned to County Clare with her 3 children, none of whom married. Another sister (Anne Doody) also went to Chicago, but then returned to Clare and got married.
