Bedfordshire / Re: Parrott family in Wootton

Thank you so much for your help.

I'm curious about that "F" in the 1841 census for David.  I was talking with my grandmother (who married into the Parrott family), and she said she had heard that David was born in Ireland, so could it be that maybe the F was actually an "I"?

David and Jane are the ones I was most curious about, so this info has been very helpful.

Thank you Mort29.

I wondered about James, as some had him listed as James Bettle, and others had James Bettle Parrott, so I wasn't sure if Bettle was the middle name.  I didn't have the date that John and Sarah married, so it looks like you're right, he would have been a son from another father.

Bedfordshire / Parrott family in Wootton

Hi all,

I'm working on the Parrott side of my family tree.  I got as far as my ggg grandfather, and I've hit a wall.

I'm hoping someone around here might have some information that would help me, or can point me in the right direction.

Here is the info that I have so far...

John Parrott (my ggg grandfather), was born abt. 1827, I just have England listed, I'm not sure where, but the 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses list him as living in Wootton, Bedfordshire.

John married Sarah Bettle (born July 1828 in Cranfield)

The children that I have listed are:
James (b. 1851)
William (b. 1856)
George (b. 1859)
Emma (b. 1861)
Joseph (b. 1864)
Sarah (b. 1869)

Joseph, my gg grandfather, was born in Aug 1864, in Wootton.  He married Elizabeth Lay (b. 1863 in Stagsden) in Wootton.

The family came to Canada in Oct. 1906, settling in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Most of their children were born in England, before coming to Canada.

What I'm hoping to find is some information about John's parents, who I have listed as David and Jane (nee Shephard), but all I have is the names.

If anyone has any info on this family that they could pass along, that would be so great.

Thank you.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for passing that along.

I did actually find a link to that familysearch site not long after I made my original post.  I found a marriage document, not the exact one that you posted, but something similar.

I tried to find a baptism for Thomas in Stoke Ferry, and couldn't find one, so maybe if he was baptised in Norwich, that could explain why I couldn't find anything.

The info I have says he was born in Stoke Ferry, but could it be possible that the parents may have taken him to Norwich, which seemed to be a bigger city, to be baptised?

I know that Thomas and Elizabeth had their children baptised at All Saints church in Stoke Ferry, but if Thomas was taken to Norwich, or was actually born in Norwich, that might explain why I couldn't find a record of his baptism in Stoke Ferry.

As far as Richard and Ann Salmon being possible parents, that makes sense, as both those names show up regularly throughout the generations.  Thomas had a son named Richard, and the name Ann shows up several times as well.

I have something else I was wondering about.  There was also a George Salmon in Stoke Ferry around this time.  He was married to a Susan, or Susannah, and their children were baptised in Stoke Ferry a few years after Thomas and Elizabeth's children were.  So I'm thinking he and my Thomas Salmon would have been close to the same age.

I'm not sure how many people lived in Stoke Ferry in the late 1700s / early 1800s, but with it being fairly small, I'm wondering what the chances would be that my Thomas and this George Salmon may have been related?  I've always been of the impression that usually when the same surname shows up in a small town / village, that usually they're related.

That sounds like the right Stuart, it matches the dates that I have, and from what I've heard, the family moved to Saskatchewan from Ontario in 1899, so that would fit.

I thought they had married prior to 1899, in Ontario, but it seems that back then, the first child usually came about a year after the marriage.  I've got conflicting dates with one of the other children, Jessie Ellen, some things say she was born in 1900, others in 1910, but from everything I've come across, I think it was 1910, so that would make Stuart the first child.

KarenM, and everyone else on here, thank you so much for your help!  I was about to give up on this part of the family, and when I saw the Wales section on here, I thought I'd give it one last try.  You guys have been so helpful.  :)

There might be something to that.  In one of the Canadian censuses, she showed up as Minnie E.

At the risk of sounding stupid, what are Home Children?

Hi all,

I'm trying to find some information on a Salmon family in Stoke Ferry.

The furthest I've been able to trace was a Thomas Salmon, who was born around 1774 in Stoke Ferry.  He died on May 4, 1852 in Stoke Ferry.

Thomas married Elizabeth Drew on August 3, 1801.

Their kids were:
Richard Salmon
Frederick Salmon
Edward Salmon
Elizabeth Drew Salmon
Robert Page Salmon
Clare Sewell Salmon (my descendant)

If anyone has any more info on this family, particularly anything about Thomas' parents, it would be greatly appreciated.  I've hit a wall here, and just can't seem to find anything past Thomas.

Could be.  I hadn't even thought of that.  I wasn't even aware that there had been a Wales, Ontario.   :)

However, the death record, that said she was born in Wales, said she had lived in Canada for 35 years, but listed her age at the time she died as 42 years, 2 months.  So at least according to the doctor that filled it out, it would seem that she had come to Canada as a child.

I'm starting to think that might be wrong though, or that maybe it should have been England instead of Wales.

You guys have been so helpful, I just hope it doesn't turn out that I've wasted everyone's time on this.

Yes, I think that's the right one.  I've got that saved to her profile on Ancestry.ca.  The last name is spelled wrong, but everything else seems to match.

That one says England, and the 1916 one, where they have her as Minnie E, lists her being born in Canada, so I'm wondering if the part on the death record about Wales might have been wrong.
