Think it might say carter work as in delivering.

I thought it might be the father’s profession as the entry above says ‘wright’ as in wheelwright.
Having read a few of these the fathers trade is usually mentioned.
As to what that trade is I’m still puzzling.

Have you looked at ship passenger lists of her coming to England. You would get her and husbands name.

I once visited an elderly lady in the late 1980s who was in Queensberry House temporarily, just before it was taken in to the construction of the new Scottish Parliament.
She was distressed at being there as when she was younger it was known as ‘The poor house’ (Workhouse in England) but I don’t know when it ceased being the poor house and became geriatric care.
It may be useful to find this out as if it was still the poor house in the 1950s then it may have been a paupers funeral ?
I may be putting 2 and 2 together and making 5 ??

Not sure if this fits the parameters for this Chat page. I have been doing some clearing and tidying in the study and came across this song from the School Hymnal of the Methodist Church. I can remember singing this in the infants school many years ago. It would be interesting to know if it is still sung, but probably now so far out of date. Perhaps rather too twee for today's children!

We used to say this as a prayer before dinner time (lunch) at primary school in the 1960s/70s, central Scotland. Goodness it brought back memories of no choice dinners eaten at long tables with the teachers walking up and down making sure every last bit was eaten before you were allowed to go out to play.

That’s very interesting M-S, I hadn’t thought of it from that angle, thanks very much.

Thank you all for the Huguenot suggestions.
Maybe I should have been clearer.

My mother’s cousin had done some work re the Huguenot line many years ago, probably 60s or 70s.

They were silkweavers and had settled in Spitalfields, London. He apparently had samples of silk that had been handed down.

I took the research a bit further several years ago with help from a very knowledgeable Rootschatter who traced the line to the outskirts of Paris.

Re my mothers DNA test I meant I was a bit disappointed that due to the lack of testing in France (which I didn’t realise when we submitted the sample) the research that had been done was not confirmed by DNA as the other areas were or her ancestry.

Yes I was born, grew up and live in Scotland but my folks are from down south.

Thanks for all the replies.

Thank you very much everyone for your help and information.
I understand the situation so much better now.

I will be able to explain the results to my mother with a better understanding.

It’s a shame though as the Huguenot branch of our tree was the most intriguing and I was hoping that it would be confirmed.

Oh well it’s not to be.

Thanks again to all.

The Common Room / DNA testing France

I just received the results of my mother’s DNA test which she wanted for a Christmas gift.

Considering I/we have no tree on Ancestry I was intrigued by the results which mirrored what I have discovered over the years.

There were only two surprises which were 14% Germanic Europe ?

But mostly was the lack of any connection to France as I have good evidence that we have a Huguenot line.

Having done a little searching it appears that the French government doesn’t allow DNA testing for ‘recreational’ purposes.

Is this correct and have others experienced the same
.
