Dumfriesshire / Re: William John Todd - b. 25 Dec 1745 (Moffat)
« on: Saturday 26 April 25 15:54 BST (UK)  »
It appears that the family tradition created in the 1990s by family historians that William Todd d 1820 Horry County South Carolina was the William Todd born Dec 1745 in MOffatt, Dumfriesshire is incorrect.    It appears that this was a guess based on assuming that this William Todd of Horry County was from Scotland, that his father was Thomas, and then finding a William Todd son of Thomas in Moffatt parish registers.

DNA reveals that the male DNA of the Horry County Todds match the family of John Todd b 1734 Scarborough, Yorkshire.   This family is close genetically to the family of Christopher Todd 1616-1686 who came to New Haven CT in 1639 from Yorkshire.    All the DNA evidence points to an English origin, not a Scottish one.

Also, male DNA from a Tod family of Moffat does not match the DNA of the Horry County Todds.

Also, the male DNA of Richard Todd d 1809 Horry County matches the DNA of William Todd d 1820 Horry County.   So they are close kin.

At long last, we have secured a DNA sample from the James Todd md 1840 Eleanor Ballyntine of castlemellan and carrickatane, County Tyrone whose grandchildren lived in Glendermot, just to the west of Cumber Lower Parish, County Derry.  The DNA matches two other Todd families.

John Todd and Isabella Mowbray of Tonduff, Cumber Lower Parish of County Derry, shown in part below.  Son John Todd md 1855 in Dunboe parish in NE Co Derry to Jane Purdy and then moved to Dumbartonshire, Scotland with descendants in Australia and New Zealand.   including George Couts Todd of New Zealand.

James Todd who married Jane Craig  and lived in Tonduff, Cumber Lower Parish in County Derry.   Brother Thomas Todd b 1811.  Son Samuel 1847-1890 lived in Gortnaran.  His widow Isabella Collingwood Todd and children moved to Ontario with recent descendants living in Stouffville.

It is gratifying to at last have proven that these three families share a common ancestor.    More DNA testing would help refine our understanding of their relationships.

in 2019, a ToddT who identified himself as Tom posted the following:

I have been reading this chat line with interest as I have been attempting to find my Irish ancestors. My great, great grandfather Thomas Richard Todd was born about 1798 in Londonderry; He married an Isabella Willson and emigrated to Canada in 1832. Perusing this chat line it seems that there were a number of Todds in the Limavady-Ballydarrog area, but I don't know if this is the Irish origin of my family.

I would appreciate any assistance in beginning this search as I am new to this process. When I search the name the UK/ Irish census more than two thousand names appear!!

Again I would greatly appreciate any insights from those of you who have already been involved.
Thanks

Tom,
The best way to see which Todds of Ireland you are kin to is to do a Male DNA test.  Are you interested in trying that avenue of research.

I am searching for a male DNA sample from the Drumglass Todds.  I have located descendants in New Jersey ISayreville) and Pennsylvania (Hanover), but none seem interested in doing DNA.

DNA would prove whether this family shares a common ancestor with the other Todds of Co Tyrone.

I also have a DNA sample in process for the descendants of James Todd md Eleanor Ballantyne.

Neil,
Have you ever considered doing a male DNA sample to see what it might tell about any connections of your earliest ancestor to other Todd families in England?

Dear finca girl,  Have you ever considered doing a male DNA sample for your husband to see if his male DNA matches any of the other Todd families in Scotland or Northern England?

DEar Alexander Basil Todd,

I have been gathering male DNA samples from Todds and Tods of Scotland, most recently from a Todd descended from and Old Meldrum Aberdeenshire Todd.  This latter sample matched the male DNA of a family that came to Northumberland County Virginia prior to 1737.

I was wondering if you might have any interest in seeing if your DNA (and hence your ancestors' DNA) matched other Tod/Todd families in Scotland and elsewhere.

It appears that a Matthew Todd on ancestry.com is a descendant of George Todd father of Griffith Todd.  It would be interesting to get a male DNA sample to see if this family can be linked to the Todds of Northern England, e.g. Durham.
