The Common Room / Problems identifying a Silver Chalice marked "V.A.S.I. 1895"
« on: Friday 27 February 15 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
This is a silver chalice with just the letters and date inscription of "V.A.S.I. 1895" engraved upon it. I am having a hard time trying to identify the origins and / or circumstances for the possession of a silver chalice. My Grandfather (d1954), a doctor, previously owned the item, and on his death it was passed on to his daughter, my Aunt. He was quite a successful athlete at around that time (1890s) and also very handy in shooting competitions. I must apologise for the somewhat inferior quality of the photos, and the fact that no hallmarks have been provided, and I suspect that a base of some sort is also missing. Grandfather attended Cantab for his MA and then continued with his Medical training at St Thomas's Hospital in London, where he qualified for his degree in general and surgery. I am at a complete loss in trying to identify this item.

Hi,

I trying to find the date that the ship immigrant 'Sir Charles Forbes ' departed from Nelson after it's arrival in August 1842 & to where it was going next?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thankyou

Ahoy kala!

It appears that the vessel was in Port Nelson for some time, and may have been slipped on the 'hard' for part of it.

However, it sailed again on Friday 30th September 1842, bound for India.

Anchor a'weigh!

I agree with Co. Derry, Tho. Carpenter, Calling=Carpenter, and wife's family name as Kidd.

Her first name maybe...Carol

I'm sorry......

but the only Greaves that I could find in the 1901 Census, appears to be an elder brother of Jonathan.

One Robert Greaves is listed at that time, as still living in the village of his birth - Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England.....the exact same village that both Betty and Jonathan were born in.

If I do manage to turn up anything else, I'll get back here. It's a shame that resolution was not achieved this time.

Betty Greaves

Lived at Mount Pleasant, Magnum a widow aged 54 in 1881

Lived at Mount Pleasant, Magnum a widow aged 62 in 1891

From FreeBMD, the death of Betty Greaves is registered in the December quarter of 1906 aged 77.

I cannot seem to find her in the 1901 census; am I totally blind?

Thank you.

Following will help to expand search scope;

Husband's name?

Marriage date?

Where is [County, Shire, Country]....Magnum?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: help with will
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 04:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone please help decipher the following bits I can't read?
So far I have:
I give devise and bequeath, excepting the (....) blocks of land with cottages erected thereon (....) near
&
executors of this my will and (.................) of my several children at the time of my decease during their respective monorities (?) and lastly severing (?)
I have removed the town name for privacy of anyone concerned.  :)
Many thanks
(more close ups in next post)

Hello mosher, this is my first post here on this interesting looking site, so here goes for you;

....."excepting two blocks of land with cottages erected thereon situate near"

....."of this my will and guardians of my several children during their respective minorities" - [until the children reach the age of 21 years].

....."and lastly revoking all former wills".

I hope this answers all. ;D
