World War One / Coldstream guards, Cycling Divison?
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have found another relative who saw active duty during WW1 Charles Edward White.  According to family notes he was in the Coldstream guards (which his medal roll confirms) but it says he has two different numbers 9453 and 7613, it also says he was in the cyclist divison for a while, but the coldstream guards dont have a cyclist divison (as far as I can work out).  Is it likely he was in the Coldstream and some how moved to a cyclist divison (and given a new number) before moving back as his record numbers reads 9453, 9453, 7613, 9453.

I cant find him in the National Archives unless he is in the unsorted lot (will have to scroll through the PDFs), from what I can see anyway.  I have looked on ancestry but it gives me an awful lot of John H Whites in the Navy at that time so it's looking very hard indeed.

World War One / Navy search

Sorry for posting another question so soon after the other but:

I have tried to trace a man called John Heddon White who served on board HMS Alsation during WW1, trying to find anything on ancestry is proving quite a challenege (although perhaps I am doing it wrong).  Is it possible to search for records via what ship a sailor served on?

I have become rather obessed with a member of my family I have beeb researching.  His name is Samuel Arthur White and was fighting in WW1 (and in fact died over in France).

So far I have found he was a Lance Sargent in the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment (9594), and that he was posted to the front line but was sent home after he recieved a bullet wound.  He was treated in a hospital in Edinburgh for a short while before going back to the front where he died at the age of 21 of sickness (which I have found out was pneumonia).  He is buried in france according to his war grave record but exactly where I dont know, hopefully someone can help me out.  It does say at the end of his war grave notice II. B. 9. I was wondering if this was a code that helped you find the grave perhaps?

I know he was awarded The Victory, British and 14 Star with Clasp), but now I am at a loss as to what else I can find out about him.  I was really hoping to find his picture but there doesn't seem to be anything (unless I am looking in total the wrong place), does anyone have any idea as to where I can find out more information.

The Common Room / Re: Underage Marriage Records?
« on: Monday 23 April 12 17:48 BST (UK)  »
The 1929 Age of Marriage Act made all marriages void from 10 May 1929, if either partner was under the age of 16. Marriages of minors, i.e. under 21, without consent after banns were valid, unless the banns had been forbidden by parents or guardians openly and publicly in church at the time of publication. A Void Marriage has never come into real existence because of some fundamental legal defect, so there was no marriage to annul.

Stan

Thank you, I am assuming that they didn't go back and change the register to remove the marriage that never was?  I guess also a copy of the marriage certificate would also not mention anything?
