The Common Room / Adoption and birth certificate query.
« on: Thursday 23 May 24 17:11 BST (UK)  »
I have just been asked a question by a friend that I cannot answer. One of her in-laws was born in West Germany. After a divorce this person's mother remarried a British soldier who then adopted this person. I have sight of the adoption papers. After the adoption a birth certificate was issued with the adoptive father's surname as this person's surname and place of birth as 'West Germany' by the GRO. Again I have sight of the original certificate. Is this a normal procedure when somebody is adopted in this country? Any information will be most gratefully received!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Mystery occupation 1886

Thanks, everyone. That's really helpful. I'm separated from my normal sources of help and this fits  with the 1891 census. Sorry about the delay in replying but I have visitors (members of the Sames family!!!).

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Mystery occupation 1886
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 17:00 BST (UK)  »
On the 25th December 1886 Grace Kingdon married George Ashworth Sames at St Andrew's church, Leeds. The occupation given for George looks like Hickle and Gill maker, Of course, I could well be wrong! Could anyone please either correct be and/or explain what the occupation means?

Thank you.  :)

Buckinghamshire / Re: Arthur William HARRIS, born Great Marlow 1878

thank you very much. I had forgotten about Alfred but your prompts have lead be to find (Lizzie) his wife's death. I still cannot find Alfred's death! The daughter died, unmarried in 1959. Their other two children died young - aged 3-4 and 5.

We can definitely discount Alfred William HARRIS. He is already in my tree. He is Arthur William HARRIS's first cousin! Sorry!

Yes, he is the son of William and Charlotte Sarah who are not in my tree. Thanks anyway!

I am still looking into Alfred William HARRIS but cannot find a suitable marriage. I suspect that the mother's maiden name is AYRES. Of course, they may not have actually been married and that might be why there was a row. Winifred May was originally registered as Winifred Rose and the middle name was subsequently changed.  I am struggling to find the family in 1921. Edit: Just found them!
