Hi Westfrem,

Have you tried John Pope's Genealogy Resource Project, only transcriptions but usually correct.

Hi Farlington,
Did you ever find any more on Robert? Like you I've got back as far as him and Hannah but am now stuck. The only baptism I can find is for Devizes but that Robert was deported in 1823. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Yes that is my William. Unfortunately I live in Wiltshire so wouldn't be able to spend the time needed in Chichester.
I have found a will for Johns brother Charles who died in EG in 1811. He mentions that John is deceased and leaves £5 to his son James (b 1771) but no mention of William, although he had been in the army for 12 yrs or more by then so could have been forgotten about.
I think Elizabeth is probably the 1786 EG burial but there doesn't seem to be one for a John and I haven't found a likely one anywhere else yet. Problem with all the Carmans is that they move back and forth between Sussex, Surrey and Kent  ::)

Thanks Liz,

I had seen John and Mary tho I'm more interested in William bap 1878 parents John & Elizabeth. He's my 3x g/grandad but now I'm wondering if he was actually a Carman. Maybe John came back but then did another runner  ;D

Hello All,

I've found a reference on National Archives for the following Warrant in East Grinstead:-

6th June 1774 John Carman husbandman, married. Has run away from wife and family.

Does anyone know if it's possible to find out what, if anything, happened afterwards. Would he have been forced to go back to his family for example?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Jennifer
I have looked at a few family trees but none of them seem any wiser than me regarding the correct spelling/pronunciation.

Hi Dawn,
I know what you mean, I've had some weird and wonderful variations with my 'Wiltshire' lot.
Problem I have with this one is that all I'm getting is the one record for each different spelling. I had assumed it was spelt phonetically but even that isn't throwing up anything remotely similar.
John was a mariner so unfortunately could have come from anywhere.
