Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Norton Subcourse - Honour Gostlin
« on: Friday 08 July 11 18:01 BST (UK)  »
Yes, that's correct - she died in 1861 aged 100 years and eight months - although there is another theory that she was 99 years old.  Either way the birth year was 1760/61.  Even more amazing than that was the fact that I have a report which says that her twin sister was still alive when Honour died!  Haven't got any further with that, though.....

To further complicate things, Honour married 4 times in total, so in 1851 her surname was Dyer, having married George Dyer in 1824 in London.  On the 1851 Census return she was down as 'Ann' Dyer on the record I have, but that may be down to being wrongly transcribed.  Her address at that time was Cliffords Inn No. 14, St. Dunstan's in the West, London.

In the 1861 Census she was still living in Cliffords Inn No. 14, was the head of the household, was correctly listed as 'Honour' and had with her her great grandson, Henry Thomas List aged 4.

Hope this is helpful. Thanks again,
Chris

Hi -

If only I had a brain.... ::)

The birth year I'm looking for is 1760/61.  Honour was married in 1789 to James Leest.  They had a child in 1791, George, and he was born in Gt. Yarmouth where his surname was recorded as List.  Honour's sister (or who I believe to be her sister) married in the same church in Lound in 1792 - she married a Robert Parker.

Sorry for this error and wasting your time, but thanks for replying.
Chris

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Norton Subcourse - Honour Gostlin
« on: Friday 08 July 11 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I'd be grateful if there's anybody out there who could help me find birth/baptism details of my 4xgr. grandmother, Honour Gostlin.  In the 1851 Census she put her place of birth as 'Norton, Suffolk'; in the 1861 Census she put 'Norfolk' as her place of birth.  I have details of her marriage, in 1879, in Lound, Suffolk but there is nothing to suggest that she was born there - Norton Subcourse is the nearest 'Norton' to Lound and so am taking a wild guess that she was born there!  I have the rest of Honour's history but am stuck on this piece of information.

I also have evidence that she had a twin sister, whose name I believe was Charlotte.  Charlotte also married in Lound, in 1792.  I'd be grateful for any pointers/help that's available - thanks for reading.   :)

Norfolk / Re: Honor Gostlin - James List - George List

Since last year I have found Honour's marriage record to James List (Leest on the certificate), which took place in Lound, Suffolk in 1789.  It would appear that James Leest was born in Lound in 1764 to parents John and Elizabeth, having brothers William (1760) and John (1762).  By the time Honour and James' son, George, was born in 1791, the surname had changed to List.

I now have proof of Honour's four marriages: James List, Lound, 1789; David Bardell, Gt. Yarmouth, 1796; Thomas Mather, St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, 1809; and George Dyer, St. Dunstan's In The West, London, 1824.

It would also appear that Honour's sister's name was Charlotte (possibly her twin), who married Robert Parker in Lound in 1792, having a daughter, Charlotte, in 1793.  I have made this connection because Robert Parker was bequeathed a gift in George Dyer's Will.

Now all I need to find is a record of Honour and Charlotte's birth - any ideas anybody??  According to the 1851 Census, Honour said that her place of birth was Norton, Suffolk - the closest Norton to Suffolk is Norton Subcourse in Norfolk, which is not too far from Lound.  In the 1861 Census she said that her place of birth was Norfolk, so could be Norton Subcourse.  Any help/ideas/anything would be most welcomed!  I would be looking at around 1760/61 for any birth record as Honour was reportedly 100 years old when she died in 1861 - at which time she was survived by her sister which is amazing and a terrific achievement at that period in history.

I'd be grateful for any help at all - thank you!

Dear Yorkslass -

Oh my goodness!  Thank you so much for this - you have no idea how hard I've been looking.  I've been to the Norfolk Archive Centre, joined the Norfolk Family History group and looked on Family Search.  This is wonderful stuff - thank you so very much for posting this to me.

I'll continue with trying to find out about James List - there must be something, somewhere and I'm determined not to give up!

Very best wishes,
Chris

Hi Alistair,

Can't help, sorry to say.  My Honor Gostlin wasn't a Gostlin for long - at least up to the research I've made so far - and as I can't find her prior to 1791, in Gt Yarmouth, I have no idea where any of her family may have ended up.

Sorry not to have been any help and good luck with your research.

Best wishes,
Chris

Norfolk Completed Look up Requests / SPARHAM - Marriages from 1573
« on: Friday 03 September 10 17:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi -

I'm attending a Sparham Flower Festival this weekend and somebody has made a transcript of marriages that have taken place in Sparham since 1573 for public viewing.  There will be some years missing, I believe, but until I go I won't know which ones.

Is there anybody out there who wants me to have a look for any information for them?

Pat -

I don't know what's going wrong with my brain lately (must be my age....) - Sparham is, clearly, a surname you're researching, not a place!  Please forgive my ineptitude.

Chris

Hello Pat,

I couldn't agree more with what you say about all the different spellings and interpretations on Census returns - we'd all make good detectives, wouldn't we??

I see that your interests include Sparham, Suffolk.  I actually live in Sparham, Norfolk - is this one and the same place I wonder?  If so, I am going to a flower festival this weekend in the village which is being run on a weddings theme.  In the church will be a list, dating back to 1573 (with some exclusions which are still to be transcribed but I'm not sure which years they will be 'til I get there), of all the weddings that have taken place at St. Mary the Virgin.  Can I offer any 'lookups' for you?

Best wishes,
Chris
