The Common Room / Re: Orphan Book

Thanks Alan

That makes sense, but in that case, on the 5th orphan down, what would £6:344 represent?

The Common Room / Orphan Book

I have attached an extract from an Orphan Book from 1716 and I was wondering what the numbers were at the end of each line.  It looks like its a Pound Sign, but the numbers don't make any sense if its money.

Does anyone have any idea?

Just as an aside, the performer "Little Tich" was NOT named because of his stature.  But the word "Tich" entered the vernacular as something small due to the fame of the performer.

If you do an image search of the triangle side, there are quite a few similar looking medals - seemingly masonic or European.

The other side with the beetle doesn't really return anything useful - no medals with that type of image.

The "hints" which direct you to another subscription only service are rather annoying.  But there is a slight work-around with the Newspapers.com.

Click on the newspaper item in Ancestry then close the window that asks you to sign up.

Hopefully you can now see "Extracted Article Text (OCR)" about halfway down the page.  Click on the "keep reading" button which seems to expand the article in OCR form.

Then I click "Ctrl-F" and my browser opens a little search window.  Just type in "Beckett" and you might find yourself scrolling through the article.

Its very rough, but I have done this with success in the past.

The Common Room / Re: Germans in London
« on: Friday 07 February 25 10:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a strand of Germans who came to London in the early 19th century - predominantly sugar bakers from Hanover.

A couple of things I noticed was that for about 2 generations they only seemed to marry other Germans and seemed to retain the German naming customs.  It probably took until the 3rd generation before they began to marry outside of their community and gradually move away from sugar baking.

Another thing was that one particular branch of the family Anglicised their surname around 1880.

Thomas could be a lodger with the Chesmer family at 58 Yeomans Row, Kensington, in 1881.
Born 1860 in Brighton, occupation poulterer.
Bev

Thanks - this looks likely - especially with the London- Brighton link

3 days difference in birth date is nothing especially when people could not read and write.

Also, quite easy to mistranscribe a 1 and a 4

Thanks - some good options there.  Particularly the birth date for Alice Maud Mary Clarke.  21 Apr 1880.

The birth date of Alice Maud Mary Butcher is 24 Apr 1880.

Also, Rosetta is also the name of one of Clara's sisters.

And there is obviously the Poulterer link.
