Armed Forces / Re: South Wales Borderers - Boer War

Thanks again - now I have something to go on.  I've been interested in genealogy for may years and have researched a number of families, but for some reason I have hardly ever come across anyone in the military other than WW1 and WW2 so its good to get a couple of leads.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.  Regarding the Boer war, there is no evidence that he took part, I agree.  Its just that I could not identify him on the 1901 census so I suppose that I assumed that he may have still been in the army.

And as for WW1, I hadn't really considered it at all, due to his age (b.1871).  Also he is on the Gwent electoral registers for 1915 and 1918.  But I will investigate - just to satisfy myself.

Does anyone know of any service records on line for this regiment for this period?

The person I am researching is Samuel Isaac Boulton who seems to have signed up in Jan 1894.  But I don't know how long he served for and if he took part in the Boer War.

He got married back in Wales in 1903 as a collier so he had obviously left the army by then.

Europe / 17th century Hungary
« on: Tuesday 11 November 25 14:28 GMT (UK)  »
After many years of research I have traced numerous ancestors back to the 16th/17th/18th centuries and virtually all of the have emanated from a small band of counties from Middlesex/Sussex across to Somerset/Wiltshire.  No exotic ancestors - not even Scottish!

But I have finally come across a Mustapha Hassan who I believe may be an ancestor of mine and he shows up in a 1691 baptism in Westminster at the age of 19 and purporting to come from Buda.

So firstly does anyone know if there are any Hungarian records available for that time period or anything pertaining to the Ottoman Empire.

I have Googled and it seems that Buda was conquered by the Ottomans in the 1500s but they were driven out in 1686 in the Siege of Buda.  So it does seem feasible that Mustapha was maybe a muslim refugee from that conflict.  And on arrival in England converted to Christianity.

Has anyone else come across anything like this?

Thanks Alan

That makes sense, but in that case, on the 5th orphan down, what would £6:344 represent?

I have attached an extract from an Orphan Book from 1716 and I was wondering what the numbers were at the end of each line.  It looks like its a Pound Sign, but the numbers don't make any sense if its money.

Does anyone have any idea?

Just as an aside, the performer "Little Tich" was NOT named because of his stature.  But the word "Tich" entered the vernacular as something small due to the fame of the performer.

If you do an image search of the triangle side, there are quite a few similar looking medals - seemingly masonic or European.

The other side with the beetle doesn't really return anything useful - no medals with that type of image.

The "hints" which direct you to another subscription only service are rather annoying.  But there is a slight work-around with the Newspapers.com.

Click on the newspaper item in Ancestry then close the window that asks you to sign up.

Hopefully you can now see "Extracted Article Text (OCR)" about halfway down the page.  Click on the "keep reading" button which seems to expand the article in OCR form.

Then I click "Ctrl-F" and my browser opens a little search window.  Just type in "Beckett" and you might find yourself scrolling through the article.

Its very rough, but I have done this with success in the past.
