 :( Bad news

From GRO site - FAQ section :

For births, marriages and deaths, you may apply online for any certificate if you have the full GRO index reference. In the case of events in the last 50 years you will be prompted to supply further details as you complete the online application form.

Having just tried to order online, the extra information required includes parents names both first and surnames. Guess we'll just have to be patient but it was exciting while it lasted

Thank you Carol and Alan

Loddon Tea Gardens!

Makes sense as I knew the area of Loddon Bridge - isn't the mind great when it gets a jog, pity it doesn't work as well under it's own steam!

Off to investigate further and of course I'll keep you informed.

And Alan thanks for sharing your memories, I only left in the early 1990's and everything is completely different.

Thanks LizzieW and Pross101. I must have read about needing all the details under 50 which is why cousin tried to do in by telephone.

It says nothing about an adoption on the GRO indexes so will try ordering online - what we should have done last year - hindsight is a great thing  :-\

Also would you believe that at 5 o'clock this morning I woke uo and suddenly realised that if cousin could have got her original birth certificate if she had undergone counselling as well. We had decided against that route as she didn't feel the need to get counselled about being adopted by her own mother and stepfather! And also it's only a few years until she's 50 so decided to do it then.

But I'm going to go online this evening and order a copy as a surprise for her, she coming here for a holiday in about 3 weeks so timing should work out
Thanks again those who said we could do it online (I blame my blonde senior moments  ;) )

I am not 100% on this but I don't see any reason why she can't get her birth certificate what ever her age

Unfortunately you have to be able to give full details of parents to get a birth certificate of someone under 50.
Was a great laugh last year when she tried to get a passport for the first time in her life. Luckily because she was adopted we got her adoption record and she could use that instead.

We even tried ringing GRO to explain the situation and they were very nice but said she had to give full details of parents names.

We're waiting with baited breath for her 50th birthday

My cousin has a similar story.

Her father was known by one name and following his disappearance (with my aunt), the police arrived at the house looking for him. When they started searching his room, 4 passports in different names were found in his room. My cousin was subsequently born and then she and my aunt eventually arrived back home. My cousin was then adopted by her stepfather. However her mother never told her what this man's name really was (if she herself ever knew).
To compound the situation she doesn't have her origianl birth certificate and cannot get it yet even though we have the GRO ref for it - she's under 50.
So that's her father's side unknown.

On her mother's side, my grandmother liked to help the troops during the war and was very very friendly with them  ;) The result of one such friendly act was my aunt (the cousin's mother!) All we know is that he was Canadian and his name was either Michael or Lloyd. We know this as she was friendly to another Canadian which resulted in my uncle. Said uncle was named after the 2 fathers! Bless you nan  ::)

The result of these is that my cousin knows only her mother's maternal line.

Berkshire / Tea Gardens in what is now Winnersh Triangle to Lower Early "roundabout"
« on: Monday 26 September 11 17:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have been told that the family had something to do with some tea gardens in Reading.

For those that know the area, I'm talking about what used to be a roundabout on the Winnersh road. Just down from the George Pub on the river. It's now been changed into a load of traffic lights and it's where you come off the A329M to get to Lower Earley. I'm sorry if it all sounds a bit vague but I left the area many years ago and am trying to describe it from memory and a brief trip through the roundabout last year (in the dark). This is also in the same area as the accident with the bridge when they were building one of the bridges. Unfortunately some of the workmen lost their lives in that accident.

Anyway for those that have stuck with my ramblings and terrible descriptions  :-[

What I'm looking for in any information / memories you may have about the tea gardens. I have also been told that where the roundabout was there used to be a cafe called Frank's Cafe which was also something to do with the family.

As you can imagine trying to google a tea garden in an area which has changed so much and which you don't know the name off is proving rather difficult, so anything you can offer might be the key I need.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry for repeating the post but I did look for that which I seek and was unlucky in my quest. I shall continue with my task once more.

Hi,
I think I need to explain myself a bit.

When I was growing up I used to draw my family tree often. It showed me and my brothers, then the parents and all their brothers and sisters with spouses and children. Then grandparents and their siblings, with children, spouses and offspring back down to my own generation.

What I'm looking for is a similar programme that I can import my tree to. It seems to be that I can have the direct lines but not the branches.

I'd be quite happy for it to only cover 3 or 4 generations at a time, it's just that I like to be able to see cousins and full families, especially as at least 4 couples with the tree were related to each other and I have one I am trying to sort out where it looks like the brother of one couple married a grandchild of another couple within the tree.

I know that Genes Reunited does a full tree view you can print out, but I find it badly laid out and difficult to see across the same generation.

If anyone else has any suggestions I would be very grateful,

Thanks

The Lighter Side / Re: BBC TV "WDYTYA?" Series 9 Episode #4: LARRY LAMB (Actor)
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 11:13 BST (UK)  »
I've yet to watch this episode (OH chose 2 mins before the start of the programme to telephone me for a chat - just because he had 2 hours to wait to make a delivery  ::) ) After all the comments I am looking forward to it even more than I was. All I can say is thank goodness for sky+.

Larry Lamb has done a couple of promotional interviews on TV this past week and he mentioned that the red button service on the BBC has some more about his story. Something about they used him to show how to do the researching and where to look. It's part of the BBC First Click campaign. I know you can get red button on freeview, but not sure about on line.
