I'm beginning to think this line just might be mine after all - I'm busy trying to find Henry Evans b 1843 birth registration, hopefully that is the link I need.

The 'Hole' surname came from Henry's death record. It may easily have been Ol[iver]. He died in 1938, and my mother, born 1936 remembers him and his wife Alice.

Hello, thanks for your reply
I had a look at the census record and saw that Ann was a Pauper as 'husband a convict'.
Henry Evans is my 'brick wall', so Im trying any and every lead I can think of. The name 'Hole' Im not sure where this came from - ancient family story perhaps, I will try to find out. The only definite of my Henry is 1877 in Reefton, NZ where he married age 27, from then on everything is documented.

The story was told that Henry was from Brighton, his father 'died' and his mother 'remarried', he didnt get on with his step father and was sent to some sort of Naval training est/school (could account for not on 1861 census). He went to sea at young age. Also that mother had to change only one letter of her surname when married. There are photos of his mother and two girls - sisters? what are the two children in 1861? Do you know the father's name?

Hi,

I've found your correspondence from a while ago. Have you any more information on this family? I am looking for a Henry Evans, b Brighton about 1850, his mother Ann nee HOLE, his father died when he was young - does this fit?  The Henry EVANS left home at a young age and ended up in NZ

Hi

It (the wreck) was really a biggie for Timaru's history. If you like I can photograph the memorial and plaques for you?  anything else you want I could pop into the archives and have a look - there is a whole section in the museum dedicated to local shipwrecks, and if I recall I transcribed a lot of first person accounts as the tradgedy unfolded.

cheers

Cynthia

Yes the Perth Street Memorial still stands. (City of Perth was the other vessel involved - later refloated) It was erected the year following the disaster, and serves to commeorate all lives lost at sea in the annual seafarers service in conjunction with the adjacent St Mary's Church. The South Canterbury Museum has a lot of information about shipwrecks - they almost wrecked ('scuse the pun) Timaru's reputation as a harbour until a breakwater was built. I think that the only person who perished in the rescue, the Harbour master Captain Mills, has a marked grave - all the others are in unmarked graves, so their ownly memorial is this one. Archives at SC Museum can give you plenty of background information. I used to work at the museum  as educator and often took children to visit the memorial and down to the scene - which is now covered in sand! I believe the anchor chain from the Benvenue still exists somewhere.

hope this helps

Hi,
I've just lucked on this thread by googling. I think I may have some information about Preshaws in New Zealand that is of interest. I am descended from David Ogilvy Preshaw's second wife, Jane. I have recently found information about the death if his first wife, and their last child, also about his brother George who was in NZ for a while. I have photographs of David, plus one of his son Charles Makinson, they are buried next to each other. If this is of any help let me know.

cheers
