Armed Forces / Re: Records for ancestors who served in military?
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you so much for the link and for checking! I very much appreciate it. I'm in the U.S., but wondering if this information is also available through the Family History Centers. I will take a look next time I'm there. I tried a search through this (very interesting) link as well, and while quite a few "John Moore" entries appeared, I also came up empty for Jonathan Moores. Ah well.  :) The search continues.... that's what keeps it interesting, eh?

Thank you again --
Debbie

Armed Forces / Re: Cheshire Regiment of Fencible Infantry

Brian --

I am wondering if you found additional information about the Cheshire Fencibles. My husband's ancestor, Jonathan Moores (later Moors), was with the Cheshire Fencibles from 1795 to 1802 (as a private, I believe). Information I located on him also lists him with the 6th Regt of the Foot, and the Glengarry Regt. He received land from the Perth Military Depot as an English settler (Canada) in about 1816.

I'm new to searching in military records, and am trying to determine what records might be available for him. I came across your questions about the Cheshire Fencibles, and was curious as to whether you've located much. I did find some military history on the regiment, but have just started looking.

Regards,
Debbie

Armed Forces / Records for ancestors who served in military?
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello --

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there are records that might help me locate an ancestor who served in the military. I have the following information:

"Jonathan Moores was one of the settlers qualifying for land from the Perth Military Depot; a military settler from England, a Private in the Glengarry Regt who, in 1816 had served 15 years and 22 days. He settled there with his wife and son.
He served in the Cheshire Fencibles from 1795 to 1802. IN 1807 He joined the 6th Regt of the Foot; Glengary Regt in 1814 or 1815.
"

I'm so completely unfamiliar with the military and regimental history, I'm just not sure where to look, and if there were any records kept that might tell me who Jonathan's parents were, and where in England he was born. (Surname eventually changed to Moors whilst in Canada).

Cork / Surnames in Cork?
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
When asked where in Ireland her family came from, my grandmother often said it was Cork. Her parents' surnames were O'Grady and McCloskey, and I've found that her great grandmothers' maiden names were Purtell (married O'Grady in Ire) and Carroll (married McCloskey in Ire). Her grandfather O'Grady's obituary says he was born in Kerry abt. 1849; but I've found no trace of him there (yet). My sister-in-law's family lives in Ireland, and they have told her that O'Grady and McCloskey weren't Cork names. I'm still looking for info that will give me an Irish county name for any of the surnames above, but so far am coming up empty. They went from Ireland to Durham, England, (and from there to PA) but that census info doesn't list a county. Just wondering if any of these surnames are Cork names.

Kerry / Re: O'Grady, Purcell from Kerry to Durham England?
« on: Friday 05 March 10 17:24 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for checking for me! I was a little surprised when I read "Co. Kerry" in the obituary. My grandmother always said she thought the family was from Cork. But... it could be that her grandmother's family was from Cork and her Grandfather's family from a different part of Ireland, as they met in England.

I received Elizabeth O'Grady's death certificate, which listed her maiden name, but it was very hard to read. The best I could tell was that it was either Purcell or Partell?

Patrick O'Grady often just listed his name as Patrick Grady.

But thank you so much for checking for me. The obituary is the only reference I've found to a specific county.

Kerry / O'Grady, Purcell from Kerry to Durham England?
« on: Friday 05 March 10 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello --

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a bit of a brick wall. My 2g grandfather was a Michael Joseph O'Grady. Sometimes just written as Grady. An obituary lists his date of birth as "29 September 1849 in Co. Kerry" though census information has his birth year anywhere from 1845 to 1849.

His parents' names were Patrick O'Grady (b. 1821+/-) and Elizabeth Purcell (b. 1820+/-) They emigrated to Co. Durham England after Michael was born.

Children:
Elizabeth? Mary? married a Cudahy resided Chicago about 1925.
Thomas
Michael
James
Martin
Thomas
Patrick

Can anyone tell me where I should look for birth info or marriage information for Patrick/Elizabeth? Elizabeth died in Pennsylvania in 1880. I've not found Patrick's death information.

Thank you so very much -
Debbie

Hello --

I'm new here and have been slowly gathering information about my gg grandparents' families. I know that Patrick and Elizabeth (Purcell) O'Grady moved to Bishop Auckland, Durham sometime after my gg grandfather Michael Joseph O'Grady was b. (1844 +/-). Several more children were born -- Martin, Thomas, John, Patrick, Mary or Elizabeth. Michael and his father worked in the coal mines.

Michael married Margaret (Mc)Closky/Clusky, b. Ireland 1845, daughter of Patrick (Mc)Closky and Ellen Carroll (Mc)Closky. They arrived in Durham (Thornley, Easington, Bishop Auckland) sometime after 1845. I've found them on the censuses. Patrick was also working in the colliery.

Michael and Margaret married in abt. 1867 or 1868, emigrated to the United States (Pennsylvania).

Margaret's mother, Ellen, died 8th March?, 1877, Hamsterly, White Lea, Crook, and was buried Catholic Church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Cuthbert, Crook May 8? I have a death certificate for a Patrick Closky ( died at age 45,Bishop Auckland, 17 January 1889, Church Hill Helmington Row) and think it may be Ellen's son, but unsure.

This is the extent of my knowledge of this family. I would like very much to find out the names of Patrick/Eliz O'Grady's parents and Patrick/Ellen Cluskey's parents, and where they came from in Ireland. My grandmother always said "Cork", but Michael's obituary says Kerry.

Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this, I very much appreciate any clues or suggestions!
