Kent / West Kent quarter session records.
« on: Saturday 14 October 23 23:21 BST (UK)  »
 Hi,

Apologies if this is not the right place for this post.

I recently found an index of West Kent quarter sessions bastardy orders from July 1758 to July 1788 on the Rootsweb.com web site and I am interested in an entry for Philis Foreman. The entry is dated 1774 and shows the Mother’s name and status, the child’s sex, birthplace and year, the father’s name, parish and occupation, a date and a folio number.

Does anybody know if the folios referred to in this list still exist and if so, are they available on-line?  Also does anybody know what additional information, if any, could be shown on the folio?

     Thanks

Thanks all

I have been trying to see if there was a link between a Thomas Manning Foreman and a branch on my tree and this seems quite interesting even if there’s no connection.

There’s quite a bit of guesswork here but Thomas married Ann Margaret Polhill in 1811 and from census records she was born in India in about 1786.

Thanks to sgf28, hanes teulu and QueenoftheWest, in answer to a previous post I made, I think that Ann Polhill’s mother was Ann Smyth who had married Thomas Polhill in 1783 at Bengal, India.

I found a newspaper article that reported the death in 1856 of Ann Smyth in Valenciennes, France aged 97. It said that she was the widow of the late Colonel Thomas Polhill and was once one of the detenues (POW’s?) of the emperor Napoleon and that she had lived with the same family for the last 54 years.

I’m not sure why she is referred to by her maiden name, but her husband’s details seem to match.

Hello all,

I am trying to find any census records for the town of Valenciennes, which I believe is in the north of France, between the years 1801 and 1856. Ancestry.com has a lot of French census records but I am having trouble identifying which one would include the town of Valenciennes. Any help would be gratefully received.

   Thanks

Hi all,

Apologies for taking so long but thank you all for the information you have given me.

hanes teulu, could I ask you where you found the information on FindMyPast about the sale of Colonel Polhill’s goods and the 7 probate records?

I was hoping to link Thomas Manning with some Foreman’s from Kent but it does not seem likely given all the military connections he had.  It’s a shame because Ann Smyth seems to be really interesting. It looks like she died age 95 in France, and was one of the ‘detenues’ of the emperor Napoleon.

  Thanks again

Other Countries / Look up for birth of Ann Margaret Polhill c.1786 in India? please.

Help needed please.

I’m trying to find any information on the birth of Ann Margaret Polhill.

From 1851,1861, and 1871 censuses she was born about 1786 and her place of birth is variously given as India, East India or Bangladesh.

In 1811 she married Thomas Manning Foreman at St George the Martyr, Queen Square, Camden, London. Both are shown as ‘of this parish’ so I was wondering if there are any records for her journey to England.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks
