I have in my family tree a marriage between William Brandish and Margaret Toomey on 23 June 1818 and at one time I had not only found the entry of such a marriage but had printed a copy of it.  Now quite a few years later I can find neither the entry nor my printed copy which seems to have got lost in house moves and computer upgrades!

I wonder if anyone can access the necessary records to find this and either let me know where I can find it or at least let me know the source. I noticed under the resources for Galway here on RootsChat that church records were mentioned so I followed the link to St. Nicholas Collegiate Church but I only get an error code.

I recorded this marriage on my family tree at the time so I'm sure it did exist!

Hi,

I just found a death entry in New York for Arthur Wilson aged 49 estimated birth year 1861, died in New York Hospital, Manhattan on 11th December 1910. It gives his parents names as Arthur and Mary and all of them as being born in England. His marital status is given as widowed and his occupation as cook.  Apart from the occupation everything else fits although I have been unable to find a death for Charlotte. It fits with your theory that Charles Arthur Cecil lost his parents when he was young and would place him in New York so that his Aunt Emmeline could care for him. What do you think? Any good? It also stated that he had been a US resident and NYC resident for 20 years which also fits with going out there late in 1888.

Thank you for that information. As far as when they went to New York I am not certain.  The information comes from Charlotte's brother Henry when he joined the army in October 1888 and he gives his next of kin as John and Elizabeth Jago (mum and dad) and their address, His older brother John and his sister Charlotte in New York. As Charlotte and Arthur married in March 1887 in Pancras, London I assume they went to New York sometime after March 1887 and up to October 1888.

There is a passenger list of the SS Ludgate Hill arriving in New York on 17th October 1888 with a Charlotte Wilson of the correct age and an Arthur Wilson of the right age on board, however it is not at all clear whether they are travelling together and I have no idea whether they are of the correct family.

The 1901 census in Hackney shows a Charlotte Wilson, a 3 year old child named as Charles born in Hackney and Elizabeth Jago age given as 68 (she would have been about 71) born in Dorset which is correct for Charlotte's mum.  Whether this Charles is really Arthur Cecil I don't know.

I've found nothing definite about any of them since then. Sorry to be rather vague.

Hi,

Yes I am still seeking any information about Arthur.  I have evidence that he and Charlotte went out to New York shortly after getting married, but what happened to them then I don't know. Did they stay in America apart from the occasional visit home? Did they have more children or split up? It's mostly curiosity that drives me on but anything you might be able to share with me I would appreciate it.

Hi,

I'm sorry I can't work out how to copy part of the certificate from the PDF that I have, but I have looked again at the address and I realised that the address 157 Albany Road isn't lined up with where the date of birth starts, the 12 that is crossed out IS. I think that they probably began to put in the no. 157 and made a mistake putting 2 inatead of 5.  This was then crossed out and the 14 referring to the correction was put in. Thanks.

For anyone interested the baby (Bertram) did stay with his step family but he died in 1896 aged 15. Very sad.

Hi,

I just read all that and I imagine the baby's step father paid the fee. The case was complicated by the fact that the baby's mother had separated from her husband (baby's step father) about 12 years earlier and had married again as had her ex-spouse. (they had 5 children together at that point). She went on to have several children with her new husband before he died shortly before the baby in question was born. Her ex husband and new 'wife' also had a large and growing family by then. I have no idea how he came to be handed the baby to care for only the fact that one of the original sons had kept close ties with his mother and perhaps he was instrumental in this.  We shall never know!

Thank you all for your input into this, it has been a complicated family to follow but you just get sucked into it and would love to have all the gossip never mind just the official documents!

Hi,
The only change on the certificate was the change to the number 12 in brackets to number 14 in brackets. I still have no idea what the 12 stood for (and now the (14)!) The rest of the cert was unchanged. I had also noted that the 42 days had been exceeded, do you think that the number refers to the extra days?  I don't know how long it was before the baby was handed over to his step father only that it was by the 3rd April as he appears in the 1881 census without a name with his step father and family.

Hi,

We have just received a birth certificate of a baby born in March 1881. Underneath the date of birth and next to the address is the number 14 in brackets, this was above 12 in brackets that had been crossed out. At the far right of the certificate the registrar had put Fourteen and his initials. Has anyone got any idea what it might mean?

In case it is of help the babies date of birth is given as 6th March 1881 and was registered on 28th April 1881. The babies mother was the ex-wife of the person who registered the baby (who was with his second wife) and we believe that the boy was taken to his step parents as his own father had died a few months previously and his mother died following his birth.

Thanks for your trouble and I hope someone can shed light on it.
