I'm trying to find out if a relative of mine was a member of the Irish Volunteeres involved in the Easter Rising of 1916 . My grandfather's brother was Andrew McDonnell who lived in Fitzwilliam Lane close to where the 3rd Battallion ( De Valera ) was based ( Northumberland Road / Lower Mount Street ). In Charles Townshend's book Easter 1916 there is a mention of Andrew McDonnell on page 258  referring to E Company 3rd Battalion

Kippers

I have Andrew McDonnell listed in the 3rd Bn list on page 380 of Dublin in Rebellion

Andrew McDonnell; armed only with a pike, he was ordered to stop a tram outside
de Valera’s HQ.

I've got a sketch portrait of my husband's grandfather, James O'Connor.  He was internee # 1348 or 1378 (I can't make out the writing) at Frongoch Camp.  This picture was sketched by an "M. Kelly" and dated October 8th, 1916 while he and James were held at Frongoch.  Would "Dublin in Rebellion" possibly contain any information on James O'Connor?

The book lists James S. O'Connor, who was a member of the 1st Bn Volunteers, was in the Four Courts in the Rising, and was imprisoned in Frongoch.

His address was 10 Beresford Place, Dublin

Dublinbook 1916

I note from your extensive list you mention the messenger Molly Adrian (correct spelling was Adrien). As I'm too far away toa ccess the archives could you give any more information about her.(even by PM)?

Regards      Quaxer

Dear Quaxer

In my notes I only have that she was a middle aged lady who cycled back and forth from Dublin several times during the Rising.  She brought Pearse's message that the Volunteers were to "Strike at one o'clock today."

BTW, in McCoole's book, No Ordinary Women, and Tallion's book The Women of 1916 the spelling is Adrian.  Is there a reason you have it different?

greetings in your book you have a list of the dublin 5th battalion and you have mentioned that the witness statement of joseph lawless (1043) gives a detailed and complete account of the north dublin area .is it possible for anyone to view or get a copy of these  witness statements

Yes

The Witness Statements are at the Military Archives in Cathal Brugha  Barracks, and are public accessible.

I understand the Archives are closed right now for renovations, so call before going.  However, under most circumstances they are open.

Also look at Statements by the following for that time/area
Gerry Golden, 177, 208, 521, 522
Sister Eithne Lawlwss, 414
Charles Weston, 1053

Paul

I have James Cassells listed as serving in both Jacobs and in the GPO in my book.

I am not "selling" books here, just wish proper copyright notice.

Thank you for the spelling correction, and that will be noted.

All I have further is that Mr. Cassels listed his address as 42 Lower Mayor Street, Dublin, and he was imprisoned in Frongoch.

I am always reticent to open the floodgates, so would like to try to keep this thread to the names of those injured.

As I understand it 3 people were killed and one man later died. the only place I see the names of the dead is in the song

Mrs. Duffy, James Brennan and Patrick Quinn died in the shooting, and thirty-two were injured. One man died later of bayonet wounds.

.

Actually a 4th died there, but she is often missed.  Alice Brady (age 15) was also killed and she is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

On 26 July 1914 at 6.30 pm, following retrieval of the Howth
Rifles, four civilians were killed and more than thirty-five were seriously injured when fired on by the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (quickly nicknamed the ‘King’s Own Scottish Murderers’ by Dubliners). About one hundred of the Borderers under the command of Cpt. Cobden had marched toward Howth to the Malahide Road where there was a confrontation with the Volunteers. The troops continued towards the city and were met along the way by a further sixty men under the command of Maj. Coke. They were harassed by civilians along the route and when they turned from Sackville Street onto Bachelor’s Walk the command was turned over to a Maj. Haig.
Those killed were James Brennan (eighteen), Mrs Mary Duffy (fifty, she was the mother of a soldier serving in the British army), Alice Brady (fifteen), and Patrick Quinn (forty-six).

The above is from my book.  I am not trying to sell books here, but will be glad to give info if I can.

All the participants in the Rising are listed.

The book is composed of stroies of the period between 1913 and 1923

I am not trying to sell books here, but do request copyright notice if the book is used.

If I can answer questions, I’ll try.
