Hi there,

Could well be, but just not sure.  All I have to go on is Robert Gardiner, born c1836 in Ireland.  He married Jane (Jean) Friel, also of Irish descent.  Unfortunately I don't know of any siblings that Robert may have had as yet, but I will continue to search.  His parents were noted as John Gardiner and Mary McKinstry on his marriage cert, but at time of death his mother's name was recorded as being different.

Thank you for all your replies, and I will try and follow some of them up.

Kind regards

Hi there,

And thank you for your reply.  Yes that is correct, he was born on 5th December 1922.  He died in Scotland in 1984.  His parent's names were Frederick John Whiteman and Winifred May Smith.

I appreciate you help with this.

Kind regards

South Africa / How to find birth/marriage records in SA
« on: Thursday 29 April 10 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was looking for some assistance.

My grandfather, Gordon Ian Whiteman was born in South Africa in 1922 to British parents.  I was wondering if anyone knew how I could locate his birth record.  Also his parent's marriage record, I think they married in SA as his father was Scottish, from Port Glasgow and mother English from Bath.

Many thanks for your asssitance.

Hi there,

And thanks for getting in touch.  You never know, could well be a relation somewhere along the line.  I do know my Gardiners moved to the Port Glasgow/Greenock area, but there will be others who remained in Ayrshire.  Robert Gardiner came to Ayrshire from Ireland, or his parents did, not sure which.  He married Jane Friel from Dalry so would be interested in any Friels living there too.

Thanks again.

Canada Lookup Request / Robert Gardiner Whiteman Lookup
« on: Monday 08 March 10 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I hope someone may be able to point me in the right direction.  I have just found out that an ancestor of mine left Greenock, Scotland in 1928 bound for Quebec with his wife and children.  His wife was Mary Whiteman and children William Henry Whiteman, aged 3 at the time and Mary Mooney Whiteman, aged 2.  On the passenger list they gave a relation in Toronto of Harry Norton, lviing at 55 Salisbury Place or Street, can't remember which.

I also knew that Robert went to Canada, but no one ever mentioned he had children.  I would dearly love to either trace them, or their family.

Does anyone know the best routes?

Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Yes that is the family.  There were quite a few of them, but the spelling of Freel/Friel changed frequently over the various census records.  I just wondered if there were any other records for the area that I could search.  On one census record it states that Robert was a greengrocer, but on all the other records his line of work is insurance.  I do know they lived on North Street.

Thanks for replying.

Hi All,

Searching for any information on the Gardiner family who lived in Dalry (North Street).  The family lived in Dalry up until the 1881 census record was taken, where they have moved to Port Glasgow.  The head of the family was Robert Gardiner, he was born in Ireland.  He was married to Jane (Jean) Friel, who was born in Dalry.  They had several children all born in Dalry.  My great, great Grandmother Elizabeth being one of them.  She was born in 1863.

I have found them on all the census records, but I just wondered if there were any other records available for the town that I may be able to search.

Kind regards
