Hello all. I need help deciphering two surnames. Both are from the Poole, Dorset, transcript.

The first name, is a recorded burial in 1563. The name appears to me as, "George Bassom". However, the last character of the surname is faded/oddly written, and therefore hard to determine what it resembles. Ancestry had transcribed the surname as "Basten", but, I believe this to be incorrect. I need second opinions as I'm really unsure.

The second name is a burial that took place in 1560. I believe it states something to the effect of, "John ... son of John Bosomme was buried ...". Ancestry suggested it was "John Beson son of John Beson" -- which it clearly is not!! But, again, I'm not 100% certain if I've interpreted it correctly!

Most obliged for your time and help.

Family History Beginners Board / Need help trying to locate a Will
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings! I am in need of help. Supposedly there is a Will for a Henry Bason/Basson, of Winterborne, Dorset, 1656 (I assume 1656 is when the Will was passed by the court?). Whom is of significant interest to my family research.

I found this document on Ancestry. Under the book, Index to Acts of Administration in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 1655-1660. Under the collection England: Canterbury - Administrations in The Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 1655-1660 (A-F)

My question is, how does one go about tracking down this Will!? and getting a copy? - Would the National archives have it? The reason I am unsure that the National Archives do have it, because I've checked their online database of Wills, and Henry is not there. But I do fully understand that their online database is by no means complete.

I would be most grateful for any wisdom or advice you could share. Many thanks for your time!

Wow! That's very interesting. Basson's from somerset! Thank you very much for sharing this.

And I would love to hear about Balson's from Dorset, I have never ever heard, nor come across the surname before, but certainly is of interest to me now. It looks very close to Basson, and I completly admit that my surname may be an evolution of a different surname.

Many thanks.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: James Bason Help

Well a census from 1841 in Morden states his age as 69, so he must have been born in 1773. I can't find any birth records for him at all, so one can only assume his birth was in 1773-4.

Also a death record shows him buried in Wareham in 1845, aged 71.

Thanks for the reply!

That's awesome. I did see that the Basson's were quite widely spread out across England. However I believe my line strays directly from the heart of Dorset.
