Roscommon / Re: Michael McGarry from Co. Roscommon, born 1877

From the research done so far it looks like Michael McGarry born 1873 in Ballingard is your Michael.  Have downloaded the info.  Born 24 Sept. 1873 to parents Patrick McGarry and Margaret Kearns.  Address given as Ballinagard, Roscommon parish.

As 'MyLuck' has pointed out, ages given in census do not always tally with year of birth.  Trust me, I have found this out lots of times in my own families research and others.  The link to the name Timothy is also a very good clue.

Another possibility is Ballinagare which is a few miles north of Castlerea. McGarry name found in that general area.  Have not had chance to look up census.

Hi Bernardine,
I did some research on your family.  I came up with the following:

Thomas Brodigan married Judith Gorman in Drogheda on 19 May 1841.

I found children:
Mary baptised 6 June 1844 with above parents.
Thomas baptised 11 Feb. 1846  (Judith Gaurn - transcribed)
Also a possible Catherine 1851 and Ann 1856.  I did not check these (fee site).

In 1911 census (free online-google) there is a family living in townland called Port, few miles from Drogheda,  with Thomas as head listed as a retired grocer. Clue perhaps.
Have a look.  From the data on the original (view) he married 1882 approx.
However, he makes himself older (this was done by people nationwide to avail of a new pension that was introduced by Gov.)

Also William Alfred Turner b.1874 to Mary Brodigan and Llewellan Turner in Drogheda.  Would like to forward to you but need to figure out  how to make contact direct.  New to site   VH

Sorry Mags,
Only noticed your post dates 2008. Expect you already have all the family history at this stage (should have put on my specs sooner). Cheers

Hi Mags,
There is a Devine living in Ardkeenan still  whose father was a Brian Devine. I think there is a connection. My husband grew up in that townland and knows this family.  It is about 5 miles from Athlone.  The postal address is Ardkeenan, Drum, Athlone, Co. Roscommon.  There has been a RC church and graveyard in Drum for centuries.  Marriages and baptisms more than likely took place in Drum church.  It is part of St. Peter's parish.
Did you get the family in 1911 census (now free online for country)?  Can view the actual census form which gives more detail than 1901.

Hi,

I did research a few years back on the Smiley/Wilkinson family which I sent to a family member in N. Ireland.  Ring any bells with you perhaps?  I still have copies of the stuff put away.  The graveyard is very overgrown and neglected and seldom used now.
I know the location of the homestead.
